Charles J. Goodwin was born in Pickens county, S.C. September 24, 1829, and died August 14, 1888. His parents moved to Anderson County, S.C. where he was married October 15, 1851 to Miss Elizabeth Crowe, a daughter of Stephen and Tempe Crowe. Nine children were born to them, five of whom were boys and four were girls. Four sons and three girls still live.

In 1854 Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin moved to Dalton, Ga., where they lived until 1864 or 1865, when they moved to Alton, Illinois, where they have since resided. Before coming to Alton he united with the Methodist Episcopal church.

He was a carpenter by trade, and followed his occupation until he was taken with his final sickness. For several months he was afflicted with a complication of troubles which terminated his life. All of the family but two sons were at home and witnessed his last moments. After talking with each of them and giving them messages of consolation, he quietly passed away.

Burial date was August 16

David's obituary: "Loyalty was the keynote of his character. Loyalty to his church, to his family, to his friends, and to the traditions of his dearly prized Southland. He was one of the oldest and most beloved members of the Methodist Church, a follower of Christ in the beautiful and simple faith of the fathers. His most beautiful trait of character was his charity for all; he was never heard to speak unkindly of anyone and never to let a chance go by to do a kindness."

D.W. Goodwin's account of War Between the States activities

David Wesley Goodwin dictated the following account of his War Between the States experiences to his daughter Abbie Goodwin some time after his return home in 1865.

"I, D.W. Goodwin, volunteered in the Confederate Army under the call of March 4, 1862. I volunteered as a private in a company of Greene County Volunteers under Captain J.W. Beck. The company was ordered to Camp Stephens, near Griffin, Georgia. There we drilled and were made part of the 44th Georgia Regiment under Colonel Smith of Macon. (Our position was on the left of the Regiment and we were known as Company K.) About the first of April we were removed to Goldsboro, North Carolina and afterward to Milden N.C., where we remained until the battle of Seven Pines. Entered this battle the last day in Ripley's Brigade. I was in the opening battle of Mechanicsville. Seven Days around Richmond, Malvern Hill. Was transferred to Doles Brigade and remained in camp near Richmond until we started on the march to Maryland. Was in the battles of South Mountain and Sharpsburg. Was wounded at Sharpsburg and was in the hospital for a while. Was there in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Was home on furlough in winter of 1863 and was elected lieutenant while at home. In 1864 was in the Battle of the Wilderness, then on to the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Here I was captured on the 10th day of May, 1864. Was taken to Fort Delaware and remained there until 20 August. When I was removed. I was one of the 600 officers sent to Morris Island for retaliation. We were placed in a stockade and guarded by Negroes. Our daily rations consisted of one pint of mush. We were there six weeks then at Fort Pulaski two weeks. We were then separated and two hundred of us were sent to Hilton Head, S.C., where for 43 days we had corn meal and pickles for breakfast, dinner, and supper. We were then taken back to Fort Delaware and kept there until the close of the war. Thirteen months from the day I landed at Ft. Delaware, I left for home, returning there June 25, 1865."

Note: Goodwin mentions that his treatment at Morris Island was "for retaliation." The North held these men here in retaliation for the bad treatment that the South was giving the northern captives at Andersonville, Georgia.
