Born Nov. 22, 1907 at Rockview, she was the daughter of Jesse and Dana Blankenship Halsey. Mrs. Gunter attended the Matheny Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband Dewey George Gunter on November 30, 1950; a daughter, Sharon Ellis; two sons, Charles V. "Sonny" and Neil Gunter; two sisters, Vergie Jewell and Birtie Mullens and two brothers, Troy and Grealey Halsey. Notes for Woodrow Halsey : MATHENY - Woodrow Halsey, 84, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in a Beckley hospital after a brief illness. Born May 22, 1919, at Rockview, he was the son of the late Jesse and Dana Blankenship Halsey. Mr. Halsey was a 60-year resident of Matheny, a member of Coonfork Church of God and a coal miner with 20 years of service. He was a custodian at the Wyoming County Courthouse and Castle Rock Bank in Pineville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Woodrow Halsey Jr.; an infant daughter, Trilla Faye Halsey; three brothers, Oscar, Greely and Troy Halsey; and three sisters, Virgie Jewell, Berdie Mullens and Annie Gunter. Notes for Ethlyne Haxlewood Creasey : Mrs. Ethlyne H. Creasey, age 84 of Stuart, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on November 1, 1924 to the late J. S. and Wyra Gunter Hazlewood. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Creasey was preceded in death by her husband, W. Clyde Creasey, one daughter, Donna Anne Creasey; and one sister, Ellen H. Martin. She was a longtime member of Stuart Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities, was vice mayor of the Stuart Town Council and was on the Board of Directors for the R. J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She had been a legal secretary for Attorney Lawrence Burton, and had been the Clerk of Court for Judge Ruth Williams. Mrs. Creasey is survived by one brother, Lee Hazlewood of Patrick Springs; three sisters, Thelma Martin of Stuart, Iris H. Hylton of Danville and Faye H. Staples of Ridgeway; several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Anita Cox of Stuart. A graveside service for Mrs. Creasey will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Stuart Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Clint Hopkins and Rev. Robert Belcher officiating. He was born in Patrick County on March 17, 1935, to Clinton Handy and Ethel Rogers Handy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Handy; and a brother, Cecil Handy. He was retired from the Carnation Milk plant and United Elastic Corp. He also was a farmer. He coached the Virginia-Carolina Little League and Colt League for more than 20 years. Notes for HARRY WALTER HANDY: The Enterprise, Stuart VA 1995 Harry Walter Handy, 79, of Mooresville, N.C. and formerly of Patrick County, died Thursday, May 25, 1995 in the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on May 16, 1916, and was a son of the late Samuel S. Handy and Mamie Gunter Handy. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Handy, William Handy and Howard Handy. He was a World War II veteran and was a member of the Rockwell Baptist Church in Mooresville. He was employed by Bassett Furniture Industries before moving to Mooresville where he was employed by Bernhardt Furniture and Wilson Security in Statesville, N.C before his retirement. Surviving are his wife, Geneva Bryant Handy of the home; two daughters, Camilla Greer of Collinsville and Donice Howard of Danville; two sisters, Ruby H. Cruise of Martinsville and Muriel Mawyer of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; two stepdaughters, Brenda C. A Patrick County native, he was born on July 7, 1919, and was a son of the late Jim and Lillian Gunter Handy. He was retired from United Elastic Company and was a member of Minnie's Chapel Wesleyan Church.Surviving are his wife, Novella Stevens Handy of the home, two daughters, Glenda Ratliff of Stuart and Susan Taro of Jamestown, N.C.; two sisters, Mabel Nowlin of Stuart and Betty Ruth Johnson of Ridgeway; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Notes for Reva Handy Rorrer: Reva Handy Rorrer, 92, of Stuart, died Thursday, January 1, 2004, at R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Patrick County on September 29, 1911 to the late Elijah H. and Lillie Newman Handy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, E. Hayes Rorrer; two daughters, Patricia Rorrer and Judy Lee Rorrer; four sisters, Opal Owens, Grace Foley, Lucy Taylor and Ethel Howell; and five brothers, Joe Handy, Ted Handy, Ernest Handy, Roy Handy and Taft Handy. She graduated from Central Academy in 1931 and from Draughn's Business College in Winston-Salem, N.C. She retired from Easthampton Rubber Thread in Stuart. Notes for Albert Alexander Hatcher: Albert Alexander Hatcher, 76 - year-old resident of 102 Lincoln Street, died in a Beckley hospital 5:30 p.m. yesterday after being ill for the past two years. He suffered a paralytic stroke about six weeks ago and remained critically ill. Born at Greensburg, Ind., he was the son of James Austin and Sarah Agnes Cooper Hatcher. He moved to Summers County in 1881 and then to Beckley in 1907. He was a building contractor and a member of the Bluestone Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Arminta Mae Pack Hatcher; six sons, Hobart, Theo, and James, all of Beckley, R. Earl of Sophia, Clyde Lee of Beaver and Oliver A. of Fayetteville; five daughters, Mrs. L. O. Gunther, Mrs. Clarice Lowe, Mrs. Cecil W. Maples and Miss Ruth Hatcher, all of Beckley, and Mrs. Charles A. Lipscomb of Jacksonville, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Vada Lilly and Mrs. Lula Cooper, both of Beckley; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born March 14, 1911, at Mount View, Summers County, she was the daughter of the late Allen W. and Maude Richardson Hedrick. Mrs. Gunter was a member of First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley, where she was corresponding secretary for the Friendship Class and a member of Circle No. 9. She was a charter member of the Raleigh County Historical Society and the Methodist Child Care Center. She had served as president of Rebecca Lodge No. 206, where she was a member for more than 50 years, and the American Legion Post No. 32 Auxiliary for over 60 years, and she was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter No. 2001. Thelma was a retired certified technician from Greenbrier Dairy, formerly known as Beatrice Food. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Gunter, on June 3, 1990; a daughter, Janice Adele G. Dickerson, on April 9, 1985; a grandson, Donald Paul Bailey; a granddaughter, Sara Kathryn Price Burdette; three sons-in-law, Raymond L. Dickerson, Donald Bailey and Gene Wickline; and a brother, Willard Hedrick. He was a charter member of Bassett Moose Lodge, Dick Bell Lodge #155 Knights of Pythias, Bassett Fire Department, Bassett Ruritan Club, and the Henry County Democratic Committee. Born Oct. 15, 1924, at Ingram Branch, he was the son of the late Homer H. Hinkle and Belva Hinkle Croft. He was a retired coal miner having worked 30 plus years in the mines at Eccles, W.Va., and at Itmann. He was very active in the UMWA, where he held several positions over the years. He was a WWII Navy veteran serving with the Pacific Fleet on the USS Barnes. He was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Doyle Hinkle. Joyce: A Patrick County man died Saturday in the R. J Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained in a tractor accident August 25. Camden Dickerson Joyce, 64, of Rt. 4, Stuart, was injured when the tractor which he was operating started over an embankment, he jumped from the vehicle and it rolled over him. One arm was severed and he received massive internal injureis. He was the son of the late Sparrell and Mrs. Cora Gunter Joyce. He was a retired carpenter, farmer, and country musician, for which he was well known in the Patrick County area. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nellie Hughes Joyce; two sons, Camden D. Joyce, Jr. and Johnny of Stuart; three daughters, Mrs. Dovie Ann Slaydon and Mrs. Louise Hammock of Eden, N.C. and Mrs. Lois Joyce of Stuart; and a brother, Crockett Joyce of Stuart. Notes for Mary Catherine Joyce Gunter: GUNTER- Mary Catherine Joyce Gunter, only daughter of Samuel and Mary Emser Joyce, was born Feb. 8, 1872 near Bellaire, Cooper County, Mo., and died at her home near Coal, May 31, 1946. At the age of 12 years she came with parents to live near Coal, Henry County, Mo., where she spent her childhood days. On Dec. 16, 1888, she was married to Thomas J. Gunter, who preceded her in death five years ago. To this union six children were born, one dying in infancy. They established their first home at Ash Grove, Mo., residing there until 1894, when they returned to Henry County to their present home where she spent the remainder of her life. She is survived by the following children: Maude E. Gunter of the home; Mrs Milton Duvall and Mrs. Ira Denny, nearby; Ray J. Gunter, Clinton and Roy Gunter, Hortense: five brothers, John Joyce, Spokane, Wash.; Andy, Blackfoot, Idaho: Jim, Boulder, Colo.; Walker, Coal; Jeff, Gaines, Mo.; also six grandchildren. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Edith Claire Leake Sykes, 93, of Mount Airy, widow of Dr. Ralph J. Sykes, passed away Tuesday night, April 27, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Stokes County to the late Dr. James Jackson and Sallie Waller Leake. Mrs. Sykes served on the board of directors of the United Fund of Mount Airy, as a life member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army of Mount Airy, and as former president and life member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Sykes was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy, where she was former moderator of the Women of the Church and former moderator of the Women of Salem Presbytery. She was honored with two life memberships in Salem Presbytery, was a former chairperson of Glade Valley School and was on the advisory board and a trustee of Glade Valley School for over 30 years. Mrs. Sykes was a member of Cross Creek Country Club and the Entre Nous Book Club. Surviving are three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dorabelle G Sykes of Mount Airy, Mrs. Saddye Jane Sykes Williams of Mount Airy and Shirley Luckett Leake of Falls Church, Va.; her nieces, Susan Leake Jones of Winston-Salem, Charlotte Sykes Bokesch of Mount Airy, Elizabeth Sykes Bessonette of Atlanta, Ga., and Eugenia Sykes Schwartz of Greensboro; her nephews, Dr. Charles L. Jean worked 40 years as a coal miner which consisted of working first beside his father at the Kopperston shop and retiring in 1992, from Eastern Coal Corp. and Harris Prep Plant as Plant Foreman. He graduated from Oceana High School in 1952, which he also had the honor that year to be captain of the football team. After many years of long work, Jean was also able to accomplish receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a major in Accounting from Concord College in 1986. Early in life Jean enjoyed playing football and tennis. Later in life Jean enjoyed watching all sports, especially when it came to basketball or football involving WVU Mountaineers. Other things Jean enjoyed doing were being with family and friends and attending Toneda Baptist Church since a young child. He enjoyed working outside, having a large garden, sewing, telling his big tales of his family and friends, which were repeated several times, but those who loved him would just smile and nod, and decorating cakes for the family and friends. Notes for Dean Patrick Lindsay: Dean Patrick Lindsay, 40, of Crab Orchard, died at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, June 12 in a Beckley hospital apparently of a heart attack. Born December 13, 1942, in Hinton, he was a son of Mildred Lindsay of Hinton and the late Louis Clifford Lindsay. Mr. Lindsay lived most of his life in Hinton and the past two years at Crab Orchard, he was a member of St Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Beckley, the Hinton Moose Lodge and was employed by the Gulf Oil Company in Beckley. other survivors include his wife, Phyllis Lindsay; two daughters, Deana and Theresa Lindsay, both at home; two brothers, Louie Steven and Dennis Lee Lindsay, both of Beckley and a sister, Regina Hogan of Beckley. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the St Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. Father Paul Tedesco and Chancellor Robert Nash as celebrants. Born Nov. 14, 1913, at Lively, he was a son of the late George W. and Anna M. Davis Lively. Mr. Lively was a member of the Montgomery Baptist Church, and was a retired salesman for the Keebler Company with 28 years of service. Survivors included his wife, Ardis M. Gunter Lively; a son, Arthur L. Lively of Waynesboro, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert C. (Beverly) Cullop of Montgomery; three brothers, Donald P. Lively of Oak Hill, Oran W. Lively of Kerrville, Tex., and Leslie W. Lively of Oceana; a sister, Mrs. French (Ethel) Davis of Beckley and five grandchildren. Lively: William David Lively, 81, of Crab Orchard, died at 12:10 Thursday, Aug. 20, in a Beckley hospital, following a long illness. Born June 13, 1911, at War Ridge, he was son of the David and Ora Bailey Lively. Mr. Lively was a retired coal miner, a former railroad employee and former owner of the Talcott Feed and Hardware, Talcott. He was a member of the Glen View Independent Baptist Church and a 51 year resident of Crab Orchard. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Lloyd, Arthur, Alfred, Frank and James Lively; and four sisters, Hettie Honaker, Ana Ballengee, Ruby Bear and Margaret Mann. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Pearl Nelson Lively; two sons, Billy Joe and his wife, Marcie Lively, of Sherwood, Ohio, and David Steven and his wife Jenetta Lively, of Crab Orchard; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Lena) Gunther of MacArthur and Mrs. William (Norma Lee) Foreman of Crab Orchard; a brother, Harry Lively of Lowell; a sister, Mrs. Herman (Dessie) Maddy of Selma, Va.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Born Oct. 30, 1915, in Haleyville, Okla., she was the daughter of the late John Lynch and Mary Elizabeth Gill Lynch. Ms. Blackburn was of the Church of God faith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Blackburn Sr.; an infant daughter, Mary Margaret Blackburn; two brothers, John and Earl Lynch; and a great-granddaughter, Alixes Cheyenne Hursey. Survivors include 10 children: Robert Stover and his wife, Margie, of Virginia Beach, Va., William E. Blackburn of Memphis, Tenn., Bernard L. Blackburn and his wife, Linda, of Tabor City, N.C., Donald E. Blackburn and his wife, Carmen, of Bridgeview, Ill., Gail A. Byrnside and her husband, Glenn, of Beateville, Ky., Larry A. Blackburn and his wife, Barbara, of Cicero, Ill., Gerald W. Blackburn of Chicago, Marilyn S. Gunter and her husband, Lonnie, of Meadow Bridge, Herbert J. Blackburn and his wife, Penny, of Midland, N.C., and Rosalind G. Musselman and her husband, Steve, of Helenwood, Tenn.; a sister, Pearl Louise Hopkins of Soak Creek; grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends. Born June 15, 1946, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Richard N. Lytle and Carrie Andrews. Larry was a retired State Farm Insurance agent with 27 years of service and had been a resident of Summers County since 1976. He was a member of the Hinton Elks Lodge and was a past exhaulted ruler of the lodge. He was also a member of the Hinton Lions Club and the Loyal Order of Moose. Survivors include his wife, Judy Wood Lytle; a son, Richard N.
