Obituaries Last Name: D-G Notes for Cletus Elmo Darnell: DARNELL KING -- Cletus Elmo Darnell, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the Maryfield Nursing Home in High Point. He was born in Stokes County April 25, 1914, to Willie C. and Lula Belle Moser Darnell. Mr. Darnell was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service and an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Darnell McKnight. Surviving are four children, Elaine Griffin of Summerfield, Deane Mendon and Gary of Rocky Mount, Ann Patterson of High Point and Charles Darnell and Sallie of Charlottesville, Va.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his wife, Dorothy Moore Darnell. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Bunny Aldridge and Ralph of Taylorsville, DeRee Burt of High Point, and Joan Derr and Ed of Mount Holly; five stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Davis: SANDSTONE — Albert G. Davis, 83, of Sandstone, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a short illness. Born Dec. 14, 1924, in Fayette County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clet and Gracie Lula Smith Davis.Mr. Davis served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from Elk Mills Stone Quarry in Elkton, Md. He was also formerly employed as a coal miner. He was a member of Ramp Holiness Church at Ramp, W.Va. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and being with his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three daughters including an infant child, Lorrenie Davis, Joann Wheeler and Patricia Cales. Also by one brother and one sister. Those left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Gunter Davis. He was proceeded in death by his father, William Isaac Davis, and his mother, Elvira (Gunter) Davis, of Beckley W.Va.; his brothers Charles, Calvin and John William; and his sisters Ila, Francis and Violet. He is survived by his sisters Margaret Leitel of Dubois, Pa., and Mary Ann Bava of Beckley. He is also survived by his wife of 52 years Delores Jean (Griffith) Davis; son Randall Davis and wife, Becky Davis, of Huntington; daughter Lana Davis of North Carolina, daughter Deanna (Davis) Hall and husband, David Hall, of Columbus, Ohio, and four grandchildren Kelly (Davis) Rutherford and her husband, Billy Rutherford, Charlie Davis (both of Huntington), Kai Hall and Gyasi Hall (both of Columbus).Jack moved to Huntington with his new bride in 1953, where they built their new life together. They raised their children, were involved in their local community and attended church regularly. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, a member of the Masons # 52 AM FM, and was a member of the Kenova United Methodist Church. During his life, he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon, was a midget league football coach and lobbied for the creation of Westmoreland Park. Jack always had a passion for gospel music, telling a joke and, in later years, golfing. Jack was a retired project manager of 30 years in the federal government.Visitation will be 6 to 8 pm at Kenova United Methodist Church, located at 503 15th Street in Kenova. Notes for Mary Ann Davis Bava: On Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, Mary Ann Bava of Gunter Road, Beckley, passed away at the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House following a long illness. She was 77 years of age. Born Mary Ann Davis on May 24, 1930, at Mt. Tabor, she was one of seven children born to the late Will-iam Issac and Elivra Gunter Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Charles, Calvin and Jack Davis and sisters, Ila Harrelson and Frances Loveday. Mary Ann spent her childhood at Mt. Tabor. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1948, she attended Concord College where she received a teaching degree. She also held a Master’s Degree in Education from the College of Graduate Studies. A dedicated teacher, Mary Ann taught many years at Mabscott Elementary School, retiring from Maxwell Hill Elementary. Mary Ann was a member of the National Education Association, and the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church where she belonged to the Friendship Sunday School Class. In her leisure time she had enjoyed reading and traveling. Her last trip was to Rome and Naples. On April 30, 2006, Mary Ann lost her beloved husband of 50 years, Tony Bava. She was the loving mother of Karen Hudson and her husband Richard of Pounding Mill, Va.; and Joseph Bava and his wife Diane of Lady Lake, Fla.; the dear grandmother of Sara and Emily; Ashleigh and Jessica; the fond sister of Margaret Lytal of Dubois, Pa.; and her sister-in-law, Delores Davis of Huntington. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Funeral services for Mrs. Ruhama Gunter, 78 years old, widow of John W. Gunter, who dies at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. I. Davis, at Mt. Tabor, Tuesday night of pneumonia following an illness of one week, will be conducted by Rev. paul Smith at the Mt. Tabor Church this afternoon at two o’clock. Burial in charge of Calfee Undertakers will be made in Mt Tabor cemetery. Mrs. Gunter was born at Lester August 24, 1859. The daughter of Patterson and Sarah Gray Deweese, she had lived in the county during her entire life. For many years she had been a member of the Christian Church and was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. She was related to a number of prominent county families. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. R. L. Toney and Mrs. Davis of Mt Tabor; Mrs L S McGhee, of Lewisburg, one son, Oliver J. Gunter, of Mt Tabor, and three stepsons, Larkin Gunter of Mabscott, Hugh Gunter of Wickham, and W. M. Gunter of Beckley. Two half brothers, Pete Deweese and William Deweese and 19 grandchildren also survive. Dodson, 52, of Blowing Rock died Monday night, Oct. 23, 2000 as a result of an automobile accident in Blowing Rock. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College and was vice president of Interstate Business Companies of America. Mr. Flippin was born in Stokes County, March 21, 1906 the son of the late Charlie R. and Minnie Dearmin Flippin, was of the Baptist faith, and was a retired farmer. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Louis and Mattie Shelton Flippin of Graham, N.C.; two grandchildren and spouses, Charles and Karen Flippin of Greensboro, N.C. and Janet and Jack Heard of Houston, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Heard and Allison Heard both of Houston, Texas and Reid Flippin and Troy Flippin both of Greensboro, N.C. Reynolds Hospital in Stuart. She was born on March 23, 1923, to James Edgar Foley and Lucy Bowlin Foley in Stuart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clay Morrison; a sister, Helen Cooper; and two brothers, Clyde Foley and Glen Foley. She was a dental assistant, worked at DuPont and was a certified nursing assistant. She was a member of Fieldale United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, W. Stuart Morrison of Gallipolis Ferry, W. Va; two sisters, Betty Wood and Thelma Conner, both of Stuart; four brothers, the Rev. Jack Foley of Patrick Springs, Buck Foley, Sammy Foley and Marvin Foley, all of Stuart; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The body will remain at the E.M. Meadows Funeral home on park Avenue until the funeral hour. Born and raised near Sandstone, she was the wife of J.C. Gunter and is survived by a son, Hobart Gunter of Sandstone; a daughter Daisy Cozart of Lockbridge, a step son Homer C. Gunter of Beckley; two sisters, Mrs. Esta Welch of Green Sulphur and Mrs. Ida Bragg of Sandstone and one brother, E.B. Fox of Hinton. Twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. Notes for Edith Elizabeth Fulk Darnell: DARNELL HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Edith Fulk Darnell, 86, of High Point Manor, Skeet Club Road, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000. She was born in Stokes County on Oct. 25, 1913, to Wiley and Floyd Fulk and lived most of her life in King and Greensboro. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in King. Mrs. Darnell is survived by four children, Elaine Darnell Griffin of Greensboro, Ann Darnell Patterson of High Point, Deane Darnell Mendon and husband Gary of Rocky Mount, and Charles Darnell and wife Sallie of Charlottesville, Va.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ethel Southern of King. Notes for James Lloyd George: GEORGE WESTFIELD -- Mr. James Lloyd George, 81, of Westfield, N.C., died early Thursday morning, October 28, 1999 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy George and Lynn Templeton, after an extended illness. Mr. George was born in Stokes County, August 29, 1918 to William Sanders and Mary Elizabeth Flippin George. He was a retired employee of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, he enjoyed gardening and sharing his vegetables with family and friends. He loved square Dancing, old timey music, and was of the Presbyterian faith. Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Thelma Beasley George of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kaylene George Hatcher of Rural Hall and Kathy George and Lynn Templeton of Pilot Mountain; one granddaughter, Sonya Hatcher Aldrige and husband Steven of Lexington; three sisters, Clara Rogers and Rachel Martin of both of Westfield, and Ruth Boles of King; one brother, Julius George of Danbury; one step-son and wife, Jimmy and Judy Kallam of Lawsonville; and one step-grandson, Corey Kallam of Lawsonville. Notes for Millie Gilbert Choate Burris: PATRICK COUNTY, Va. - Millie Gilbert Choate Burris, 97, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, in Patrick Community Hospital. A native of Patrick County, where she spent the last years of her life, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Newman Gilbert. She was the widow of Dr. Virgil O. Choate of Galax, Va., and Mr. Hoburt Burris of Niles, Ohio. After 1924 graduation from Ferrum College, she returned to Patrick County to teach school. She later enrolled in Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing from which she graduated in 1931. She and Dr. Choate were a medical team in Galax until his death. After his death, she served as a public health nurse in Carroll County, Va., until she retired. She later married Mr. Burris and lived in Niles, Ohio until his death in 1987. She then returned to Patrick County to live. She was a charter member and worthy grand matron of Galax Chapter 165 Order of Eastern Star and member of Galax United Methodist Church for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her five brothers, G. Newman Gilbert, W. Odom Gilbert, Cecil J. Gilbert, Ivan P,. Gilbert, Coy Gilbert; and her two sisters, Lucy Gilbert and Vada Gunter. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ruth G. Gilbert of Stuart, Va., and Jeanne Marie Gilbert of Pilot Rock, Ore. Also surviving are her six nieces, Mary Ann Honeycutt, Connie C. Rhoads of Winston-Salem, N.C., Nancy G. Hopkins and Jane G. Stevens of Stuart, Frances G. She was born June 28, 1922, in Eccles, and was the daughter of the late Henry and Willa Gunter Godby. She was also preceded in death by a grandson Thomas Andrew Prince and her husbands James A. Prince and Racine O. Thompson. She was a retired secretary with the United Mine Workers. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and attended the Open Door Church of Shady Spring.
