TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES
Passengers numbered 1 through 5 on this list are believed to be ancestors of the transcriber. When I found the index cards for these five on the NARA Index film, 1 was listed as being born in St. John, but 2 through 5 were listed on the cards as being born in Ireland.
This passenger list was obtained from the archives of the state of Massachusetts. While the information on the cards for passengers #1-5 was present on NARA'a INDEX film cards, the passenger list for the arrival of this ship at the date and time indicated on NARA's PASSENGER LIST film was missing. It appears that the Massachusetts record may have been copied in an abbreviated format from the federal records prior to NARA's filming of the lists, and the list was misplaced. The state format used only the number, name, age, and where born columns. The recorder used ditto marks when repeating names, but did not use them in the "where born" columns. The state used a two column format. Numbers 1-16 were in a left column, 17-57 occupied all of a right column, and 58-61 were on another page at the top of a left column. The three entries of St. John each appeared at the start of a column, leaving the meaning of the blanks in the "Where Born" column uncertain. No attempt was made to copy the Captain's sworn statement at the beginning. This list began with the following information: "H 17" (the unique passenger list number assigned), "April 8, 1862; Steamer Forest City from St. John."
The format they followed entered the name of each captain at the end of the list: " 61 Captain Field."
I and 30 have the name Michael spelled as the recorder entered them
16 and 57 appear to have been entered between the last line and the edge of the page, resulting in illegibility due both to wear and to the limits of the microfilming process.
Question marks were used when the letters could not be determined.
