JULIA ANN ELLEN JACKSON HEMBREE ABRAMS

Julia Ann Ellen Jackson was born in 1843, Kentucky. She was my gr.gr.grandmother.

She was daughter of Thomas Jackson and Malinda Edwards Jackson. Thomas Jackson was born about 1818, Madison Co. Ky, and died in 1859 from a farming accident in Jackson Co. Ky. Malinda was also born about 1818 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. I was told Julia insisted her name was Julia Ann Ellen, or Julianne Ellen.

Julia m. William Hembree August 6, 1859, Jackson County, Ky.

Malinda Jackson age 42, widow, 150 real estate, 1200 personal property, born Indian(a)?
(My researcher friend, Gloria Ross believes Malinda was born Tennessee, not Indiana. There is a line through the last a in Indiana on actual census, so she believes census taker meant she was Indian)

Julia Ellen married William Hembree in Jackson County, August 6, 1859. They had one son, John L. Hembree, born February 20, 1861, Estill County, Ky. William enlisted in the Union Army at Estill Springs, Estill Co. Ky on October 10, 1861, he died at Lebanon, Ky. of fever on January 18, 1862.

My Strange Notes

William and Julia married in 1859, in Jackson County (connects with Rockcastle). Julia and William married in 1859, yet Julia is listed with her mother's household in 1860 Rockcastle Co. Ky census. Julia's father died in 1859, and her mother had a new baby, so she may have been staying close to her mother when census was taken.

Rockcastle County, Ky. was formed in 1810, from parts of Lincoln, Madison, Pulaski and Knox counties. In 1825, they added to it a part of Laurel County and in 1858--the year before Wm. and Julia were married, Jackson County, Kentucky was formed from Clay, Estill, Laurel, Madison, Owsley, and Rockcastle Counties.

That same area is where Rockcastle River divides Jackson and Rockcastle Counties now, next to Horselick Creek area of Jackson County, where Julia and William's son, John lived and died.
Wm. and Julia could have lived in the same area, but with county lines being formed and changed, could have ended up seeming like they were in different counties.

Julia's Life After William Hembree's Death

Sometime after William Hembree's death, Julia m. unknown first name Jones. In 1864, Julia had a second son she named William. He went by William A. Jones and lived in Jackson Co. Ky. according to Madalyn Embree, who knew the family.

In 1865, Julia married Turner Abrams, whose descendants say was a good friend to William Hembree. 1870 Jackson Co. census shows both John, age 8 and William, age 5, listed as Hembry's living with Turner and Julia. In census's after that, William is included with no different last name. but two of my sources said he did use the name of William A. Jones.

The story passed down through the Abrams family was that Turner and William Hembree had been best friends, were in the Civil War together. William didn't make it back home, and later Turner and Julia Ellen married.

In my research, I found that Turner Abrams was in the (Union) 49th Infantry Regiment, William was in the (Union) 8th Ky. Infantry, so they probably were never together during the Civil War, although they did both fight for the Union. They very well could have been good friends and probably signed up to fight at the same time at Estill Springs, Estill Co. Ky.

On 1860 Madison County Ky. Census, Elliston Precinct, Turner Abrams is 14 and living in household of James E. Harris. It could be that Turner Abrams, Julia Ellen Jackson and William Hembree knew each other from childhood--remember the county lines changing? Turner would have been born about 1845-46, so they all would have been fairly close to same age.

1870 Jackson County Ky. US Census, Coyle Precinct #3, Big Hill, Ky.

Turner Abrams b. Ky.
Julia A. E. b. Ky.
Anice age 11 mths. b. Ky.
John L. Hembry age 8 b. Ky.
William A. Hembry age 5 b. Ky.

1880 Jackson County Ky. US Census, Coyle Precinct #3, Big Hill, Ky.

Turner Abrams b. Ky
Julia Ellen Abrams b. Ky.
William age 12
Ann/Anice? age 11
James age 10
By this census, John Hembree had married Lilley Rose at age of 17, in 1878, so they are on the Horselick Creek, Jackson Co. Census with their first child, Sarah.

Note from Gloria Abrams, whose husband is descendant of Turner Abrams

The information I have is that Turner Abrams d. 15 Jan. 1908. Julia Ann is unmarried in the 1910 and 1920 census. She must/may have marrried FN-UNK Powell because that is the name she was buried under. She died 02 Aug. 1930. She had two sons when she married Turner, John and William. She and Turner had 3 children-James Marion b. Aug. 1870, Ann/Anice b. abt. 1869 and Emma/Emmer b. abt. 1879, James Marion Abrams being Gloria's husband's grandfather.

Thank you, Gloria Ross, for all your excellent help in tracking down my William Hembree, Julia and all--I couldn't have ever done it without you, and I could never thank you enough!!
Sincere thanks also to Gloria Abrams, and her husband that I find I'm related to! Also to Wilma Abrams Hobson, for setting me on the right track, thank you so much! God bless you all!
