My great grandfather, John Emry(spelling in 1880 Jackson Co. census) was born in 1861 in Estill County, Kentucky. He was the son of William Hembree and Julia Ann Ellen Jackson.
He was only a year or so old when his father died, so with time the "Hembree" name was lost or changed. His father's name on Civil War records, and marriage record, is William Hembree.
They spelled John's name "Emry" on census, probably just because it sounded like that.
My grandfather and most of his brothers were only young children when they were orphaned, all used the Embree spelling as adults, perhaps so they wouldn't lose each other--maybe because they didn't know they were really Hembree's.
On April 1, 1878, John Embree(Hembree) married Lilley D. Rose, born in 1859, Jackson County, Ky., she was abt. 19 at marriage, John was 17. John and Lilley both died within 2 weeks of each other in about 1899 or early 1900, leaving 7-9 children as orphans to survive the best they could.
Lilley Rose was the daughter of John T. Rose and Martha Ann Priest (DePriest).

There was always a great mystery of what had happened to my great grandparents, John and Lilley. That was my question when I started searching so long ago.
This mystery was solved when Gloria Black added information from records of her gr. grandfather, Judge William H. Clark of Jackson County, Ky. on the Jackson County Ky genweb site, I cried when I found her information.............these are original documents concerning the Smallpox epidemic and the voters, the guards placed to protect the spread of disease, etc. My page, "Smallpox and Stubbornness in Jackson County " is about John and Lilley's sad story.

My dad found his "Uncle Bill" in 1965 or so. His son Vernon would bring him to visit Daddy and they had the best time, talking and rabbit hunting. Daddy looked for them all, but only found Bill and Huey.
"Tom" was my grandfather. He married at age 17 first to Velma Williams, daughter of George Williams and Susie Cates Johnson Williams. Velma was my grandmother.
He is buried at Pilot Knob Cemetery, Berea, Ky. next to his second wife, Lucy Settle Smith Embree.
I would love to find more about Chester. All I know is he raised his family in Estill Co. Ky. His son, Chester, my father's first cousin died on Nov. 15, 1996 He married Nettie Sams, daughter of Ike and Nortie Lairson Sams. They are buried in Garrett Cemetery, Estill Co. Ky.

Sincere thanks to Donny Perry, who sent me much of this information on the Rose family. Donny is gr. grandson of "Whit Rose" who was my gr. grandmother, Lilley Rose's brother. I also want to thank my 2 genealogy angels who helped me with Sarah's information, I am forever grateful to both of you.
