ALEXANDER CATES was born about 1808 in Orange Co. North Carolina. He died from wounds suffered in the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, 1865. He married MARY A. " MALINDA " PARK, daughter of RICHARD PARK and NANCY KINDRED. She was born 1815 in Boonesborough, Kentucky.

Nancy was daughter of ANDERSON KINDRED b. 28 Sept. 1821 in Madison Co. Ky. and mother, SALLY ANN RUBLE b. 5 July 1827 in Estill Co. Ky.
John and Nancy had 9 children, Nancy died of "childbed fever". John and Nancy are buried at Beaver Pond Christian Church Cemetery, aka Kindred Cemetery, Red Lick Creek, Estill Co. Ky.
