38. Maxwell WHIDDON
was born about 1767 in North Carolina. He appeared in the census
in 1790 in Cheraws Dist., SC.39
listed as Max Whidden and household as 1 white male 16 years and upward, 1 free
white female and 1 slave. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Darlington Co.,
SC.40 which lists household
as 3M under 19, 1M 26 and under 45, 1M 45 and up: 1F 10 under 16, 1F 45 and up
and 5 slaves. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Darlington Co., SC.41 which listed a "Max WHIDDON"
and which lists household as 1M 26 under 45: 2F 10 under 16, 1F 26 under 45 and
5 slaves. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Wayne Co., MS.42 which lists household as 1M 16 to 18, 1M 16 to 26,
1M over 45; 1F 16 to 26. He died in 1833 in Wayne Co., MS.
Strickland & Edwards lists year of birth as 1775. Maxwell and his brother,
James, migrated to Darlington District, S.C. after 8 Jan 1788 along with his
uncles Noah and William and others on a large migration from Nash County, NC.*
The First Census of The United States, 1790, lists a Max Whidden in the Cheraw
District of South Carolina along with a William Whiddon, although it is not clear
which relative he might have been. There was a free white female listed in the
household of which Max was the head. The Cheraw District was divided, in 1798,
into Chesterfield, Darlington and Marlborough districts. In 1868 South Carolina
districts were renamed counties.
The 1800 Census for South Carolina lists a Maxwell Wheedon in Darlington Co.,
SC. The household contains 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 male 45 and up;
3 females 10 to under 16, 1 female 26 to 45 and 5 slaves. Ely Wheedon listed
on same page, 123.
The 1810 Census for Darlington Co., S.C. lists a Max Whiddon, age 26-45, two
females age 10 to under 16 and one female age 26-45 and 5 slaves.
Max Whiddon's name first appears in the Wayne County, Mississippi Tax Roll in
1818 when he is taxed for 5 slaves. His name then appears annually, thereafter,
through the 1829 Tax Roll. He pays taxes each year on slaves, maximum of 12 in
1828. In 1822 through 1829, he has property listed as "100 acres, 4th class,
2nd quality, value $ 300.; on Chickasawhay; Title from U.S." **
The 1820 Census for Wayne County, Mississippi lists a Max Whidon, age over 45,
household; 1M 16 to 18, 1M 16 to 26, 1M over 45, 1F 16 to 26.
It is believed by this compiler that this is the same Maxwell (Max) Whiddon
as this was a similar pattern of migration used by his uncle Noah and his cousins,
John and William, who settled in Henry County and Butler County, Alabama.
