6. Capt. John
WHIDDON (III) was born before 1678 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA.4,10 He died
about Jan 1750 in Norfolk Co., VA.10
Capt. John Whiddon decided his career would be the sea, following his maternal
grandfather, Capt. John Nicholas. Many of his descendants remained in Norfolk
County, Virginia down through succeeding generations.
Capt. John's name appears in the Norfolk County Tithables list along with his
cousin William Whiddon and a John Whiddon, Junr. and a Thomas Whiddon. His name
does not appear in the 1730 list and John Whiddon Junr.'s name appears only in
the 1730 list. In 1731 and 1732 he is listed in the Indian Creek Canton Precinct;
1733 he is listed both in the Indian Creek Canton and West Side of South Branch
Precincts with identical listings; 1735 and 1736 he is listed in the Ferry Point
to Great Bridge Precinct.*
Capt. John married in May 1729 and on 13 Aug 1729 he executed a Gift Deed that
was acknowledged by him in court on 15 Aug 1729. He detailed gifts of land, offspring
of his slaves and his slaves to various members of the Cawson family, his wife's.
It will be noted that the first individual mentioned in this deed was "my
well beloved friend Chris Cawson". ** Christopher Cawson was also listed
in the same entries, immediately following Capt. John Whiddon's name, on all
the above cited Tithables listings for 1731-1736.
Capt. John Whiddon did leave a will dated 9 Nov 1748 and proved 18 Jan 1750.
His bequests were to his daughters Mary (Whiddon) Herbert and Martha Whiddon;
his son John Whiddon and to his wife, Abigail (Cawson) Whiddon. He mentioned
in his will "one hundred Acres of Land with the Plantation which I bought
of William Whiddon".***
"Capt. John Whiddon died in 1750. His Will is lengthy, but informative,
so it is included here in its entirety.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I John Whiddon of Norfolk County in Virginia being sick
and weak but in sound and perfect sence and memory praised be Almighty God for
it but nowing it is appointed to all men once to die do make and ordain this
to be my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as followith: First I bequeath
my Soul to Almighty God and the Lord Jesus Christ that give it and my body to
the Earth to be buried in a decent manner as my executors hereafter named shall
think fitt and for all my Worldly goods as well as personal after all just debts
paid I do give and bequeath in manner and form as follows --
ITEM I give and bequeath to my Daughter Nary Herbert wife of Marcom Herbert the
Dividend of Land with the Plantation thereon that I bought and purchased of William
Ballantine Lying on the South side of Bay Tree Hole to her and her Heirs for
ever being the same Land I have already made over to the Said Markcom Herbert
by and acknowledged in the open Court of Norfolk I also give to my Said Daughter
Mary Herbert one negro man called Sam also one negro woman called Cabe with her
increase all which she is and hath been possessed with I also give to my Said
Daughter Mary Herbert one heifer at my decease it being in full her portion.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my Daughter Martha Whiddon one Hundred acres of Land
with the Plantation thereon Lying on the North Side of the Western Branch of
the Elizabeth River being the Land formerly Mossets which Said Land I give to
her and her Heirs forever and in case an Heir shall come and disinherit my Said
Daughter of the Said Land then my will is that my Said Daughter Martha Whiddon
shall have one Hundred acres of Land with the Plantation which I bought of William
Whiddon to her and her Heirs for ever I also give to my Daughter Martha Whiddon
four Negroes in this order; Sarah George Chinea and Hannah to her and her Heirs
for Ever and the increase of the Said three girles I also give to my Said Daughter
one feather bed Furniture.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Son John Whiddon the house and Plantation with
the Woodland Grounds thereunto Belonging to which I now Live on also fourteen
acres of Land Joining thereon called Pedley's I also give to my Said Son John
Whiddon Three negro men viz; George Ceaser James also a negro boy named Sam also
I give to my Son John Whiddon one negro Woman named Lemon and five girles viz;
Nanny Dinah Easter Lemon and Pleasant them with their increase to him and his
Heirs for Ever only reserving to my Loving wife Abigail Whiddon the use of the
negroes and Estate with priviledges of the house and Plantation I now Live on
during her natural Life and after her decease as before Said to my
Son John Whiddon and his Heirs for Ever But if it should please God that my Daughter
Martha Whiddon should Die before she attains to the years of twenty one or marry
then and in such case her Estate both Real and Personal to fall to my Son John
Whiddon and his Heirs for Ever and if it should please God that my Son John Whiddon
should Die before he attain to the age of twenty years at which time I allow
him of age or marry then and in such a case his estate both real and personal
after my wife's decease to be equally divided between my two Daughters viz; Mary
Herbert and Martha Whiddon them and their Heirs for Ever And for the true performance
of this my Last Will and Testament I do hereby appoint and nominate my Loving
Wife Abigail Whiddon and my Son John Whiddon wholly and jointly my Executrix
and Executor in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my Seal
this 9th day of November Anno Domi 1749
