Georg Elsinger
Georg Elsinger was born on 20 February 1886 at Bruck, Oberpfalz, Bavaria.1 He was the son of Elisabeth Elsinger. The first time Georg travelled to the United States was in 1905. He left Antwerp, Belgium on September 23rd on the ship Vaderland and arrived at the Port of New York on October 2nd. His occupation was listed as cartwright and his destination was Hartford, CT. His step-brother, August Rothauer [Rothammer], paid for his passage.

The second time we find Georg on a ship's manifest is in 1911 when he sailed from Bremen on May 20th on the S.S. George Washington, arriving at the Port of New York on May 29th. He is listed as having been visiting his father, Franz Rothauer [Rothammer], in Bruck, Germany. His final destination was Brooklyn. Franz Rothammer was actually Georg's step-father.

Georg married Mary Birmingham, daughter of Peter Birmingham and Britget Murroy, on 27 April 1912 at St. Peter's Church, Hartford, Hartford Co, CT.2 She died on April 26, 1914 shortly after giving birth to her second child. After her death, Georg took the two baby boys back to Germany to be raised by his mother Elizabeth Elsinger Rothammer. Georg hired two nurses to help with the babies during the crossing on the steamer Cleveland.1 According to Georg's granddaughter, who lives in Germany, once Georg was back in Germany he was required to stay and serve in the army during WWI. It wasn't until 1928 that he returned to the U.S.3

On June 21, 1928 Georg left Bremen. He arrived in New York on July 2nd. On the ship's manifest he is listed as 42 years old, a widower, and a farmer. His last permanent residence was Brueck (Bruck).

Georg appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of West Hartford, Hartford Co, CT, at 92 South Street, enumerated 14 April 1930, living in August Rothammer's household (his step-brother).4

Apparently Georg married a second time to a woman by the name of Bertha (Peters) who was born circa 1888 in Berlin, Germany. They both show up on a border crossing entry from the U.S. to Canada on May 31, 1934 at Fort Erie, Ontario. Georg is listed as a night watchman in transit to Detroit, MI. They were traveling by auto but apparently rejected from entering. His nearest relative in the U.S. is listed as Richard Peters, New Haven, CT, his stepson.5

Georg was naturalized on April 3, 1935 in Hartford, CT. He was living at 58 Buckingham Street at the time.6 In 1942 Georg registered for the WWII draft.7

Georg Elsinger married Mary Lill, daughter of Herman Lill and Michalina Kowalczyk, on 27 June 1942 at New Britain, Hartford Co, CT; by a Justice of the Peace.3,8 In the marriage record George was listed as being divorced and his occupation was given as machine operator. Both he and Mary were listed as living at 210 Glen Street, New Britain.8 Georg Elsinger died on 2 March 1966 at Sky View Convalescent Hospital, Wallingford, New Haven Co, CT, at age 80.9

The following obituary appeared 3 March 1966 in the newspaper:

George Elsinger, 80, of 210 Glen St., died last night at Sky View Convalescent Hospital, Wallingford, after a long illness. Born in Germany, he lived in this city 60 years and retired from the North & Judd Mfg. Co. in 1950. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary (Lill) Elsinger; two sons, Joseph A. of this city and George Elsinger in Germany, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Graveside services will be held Saturday at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours at the Farrell Funeral Home will be tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m.3

Georg Elsinger was buried on 5 March 1966 at Mount St. Benedict's Cemetery, Bloomfield, Hartford Co, CT.10

Mr. Fraundorf had been in excellent health up to October 20, when he caught a severe cold from which he never fully recovered. Mr. Fraundorf had been called to Milwaukee by the severe illness of his mother, Mrs. Katherine Fraundorf and while there was taken sick. His mother passed away October 19 but he was unable to attend the funeral. He was brought to this city October 20, and had since been confined to his bed, passing away Thursday evening. Death was caused by acute neuritis. The deceased was born at Milwaukee February 20, 1856, and spent his boyhood days at Milwaukee and Knowles. While there he followed the occupation of a carpenter.
