John Gilliland

M, b. 1765, d. June 1849
John Gilliland was born in 1765 at SC.1 He married Charity Richardson, daughter of Mathias Richardson Sr. and Frances R. Clark, before 1790 at Pendleton Co, SC. The marriage date comes from the fact that Charity is not listed in the 1790 Federal Census with her father and family. (The 1790 Federal Census of the Ninety-Six District, Pendleton County, South Carolina for Mathias Richardson showed a household consisting of two white males under 16, one white male 16 and over, and five white females. The five white females would have been his wife Frances and daughters Catherine, Martha, Frances and Elizabeth).2

John appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of the Ninety-Six District, Pendleton Co, SC, enumerated 17 May 1791, with a household listed as one free white male 16 and over, and three free white females.3 The family was living a short distance from Charity's parents, the Mathias Richardson family. (John and Charity were listed on the census on the page after the Richardson's).

It is believed that sometime between 1797 and 1800 John and Charity moved to Kentucky. A John Gilliland was found living in Logan County, KY in 1800.4

In the 1810 Federal Census for Logan County there was a John "Gillerland" listed with a household consisting of three white males under 10, one white male 26-44, one white female 10-15, one white female 26-44, and one white female 45 and over. These ages do not correspond with the family I have for John at this time and this is the only Gilliland family in Logan County. In Barren County, KY (two counties to the east of Logan County) there was a John Gilliland listed with a household of two white males under 10, one white male 10-15, one white male 45 & over, two white females under 10, and one white female 26-44. While these ages do not correspond exactly with what I have for John either, they are much closer. He was living within a few families of two other Gilliland's - Jonathan and Jas. These were the only Gilliland's living in Barren County. I do not know who the other Gilliland families could be.5

In 1820 there was a John "Gillilan" who appeared in the federal census for Petersburg, Simpson County, KY. His household consisted of two males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 16-18, one male 45 & over, three females under 10, one female 10-15, one female 16-26, and one female 26-44. This is pretty consistent with the ages of the known family for John at that time. John was listed as the only one engaged in agriculture.6

The 1830 Federal Census for Simpson County, KY showed a John "Gillen" with a household of one male 10-14, one male 15-19, one male 60-69, one female 15-19, and one female 50-59.7

By the 1840 Federal Census John and Charity were found living with son James R. James's household consisted of one male 10-14, one male 20-29, one male 70-79, and one female 60-69. It also showed that three people were employed in agriculture.8

In 1841 John transferred 196 acres of land that he owned on Drakes Creek in Simpson County into a joint holding of him, and sons James R. and Richardson. By 1843 the land was owned solely by James R.

In 1845 John offered a $300 reward for the apprehension of Moses Mayes, the murderer of his son Richardson Gilliland. There was a lawsuit filed by a James H. Davis against Huffines, Dunn & Hulsey, for his share of the reward money which John had paid to Huffines, Dunn & Hulsey on January 25, 1845. Moses Mayes was convicted of manslaughter on June 5, 1845 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was pardoned five years later.9

John Gilliland died in June 1849 at Simpson Co, KY; at the home of his daughter Martha Ann Reeder.10

John Jamison was born on 27 October 1746 at Little Britain Township, Lancaster Co, PA.1,2,3 He was the son of Samuel Jamison and Catherine Cowden. John Jamison married Nancy Aitkins, daughter of James Aitkins and Jane (?), on 4 December 1769 in what would become Franklin Co, VA.3 Their first nine children were born in Franklin County.3 Around 1792, John and his family moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina where their last three children were born.3

On September 4, 1796, John purchased 172 acres near the head of the Rocky River in Mecklenburg County. Then on December 20, 1797 he purchased an additional 23 acres on Rocky River. Over the next 26 years, until 1823, there were a number of land purchases and sales involving the Jamison family. Because John not only had a son by the name of John but also a grandson, it has been difficult determining exactly which deeds belonged to which John Jamison. A listing of all the land records can be found on the Land Records page by following the link at the top of this page.4,5

Once in North Carolina four of the Jamison daughters married. Marriage bonds were made for Jenny on February 10, 1797 with John as bondsman. Catherine was next with her marriage bond made on March 31, 1801 with John again as bondsman. On January 19, 1803 brother Adam posted a bond for his sister Elizabeth. And finally, on January 26, 1809 James posted a bond for his sister Nancy.6

I could not find an 1800 or 1810 census listing for John in either Mecklenburg or Cabarrus County. In the 1810 Federal Census for Cabarrus County there was a James Jamison with a household that included three males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 26-44, one male 45+, three females under 10, and two females 26-44. I believe that John was living with his son James Carson.7 In the 1820 Federal Census for Cabarrus County, NC there was a John Jamison with the following household: one male 16-26, one male 45+, one female 16-26, two females 26-45, and one female 45+, with two persons engaged in agriculture.8

After 1823 land records in the counties of Mecklenburg and Cabarrus ended and it appeared that the whole Jamison famiy moved to Pike County, Missouri. To date I have only been able to search land patents for Missouri and so I don't know if John purchased any land in Pike County or if he continued to live with one of his children.2

John Jamison died on 7 September 1824 at age 77.1,2
The name of John's wife, Nancy Aitkins, and their marriage date, was found in a handwritten Family Register supposedly written on October 22, 1815 in Rowan County, North Carolina. This is the only evidence we have to date that tells us about John's marriage.

But an interesting item appears on pages 562-563 of the book "The History of Pike County, Missouri" published in 1883. In an Addenda recalling stories from old settlers of Pike County we find the following sentence. "Among the early marriages in his recollection Mr. Fielder remembers as the first that of John Jamison to Miss Nancy Cantrell, the ceremony being performed at his father's house."

As far as I know, the only Jamison family that settled early in Pike County, Missouri was our Jamison family. Was this a second marriage for John?

The date for the death of Nancy came from a Jamison family history compiled by Sarah Melvina Devaney, daughter of Margaret Melvina Jamison (1835-1916) and James Henry Devaney. It said "His wife, Nancy, died June 5, 1830". I have always thought this to be John's first wife, Nancy Aitkins. But if John was indeed married a second time to a Nancy Cantrell, then that sentence could very well apply to the second Nancy.

James Wilson Jamison was born on 21 September 1835 at Frankford, Pike Co, MO.2,3 He was the son of Adam Jamison and Nancy Sherwood. James Wilson Jamison married Matilda Jane Spencer on 1 May 1861 at Peno township, Pike Co, MO.4,5,6 According to an article by Earl Jamison, James's grandson, James fought with the Confederacy during the Civil War. It also mentions that a great uncle "gave up the grey uniform to serve in the more dangerous role of a Confederate spy, was caught and executed by the Union forces when he tried to pay a clandestine visit to the old home and was spotted by a former schoolmate". However, all of James's brothers are accounted for and lived to be old men. Another tall tale??7 James and Matilda Jane Spencer appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Village of Beetown, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 27 July 1870, reporting the family owned real estate valued at $1200 and personal property valued at $400. Their children John Adam, Robert and George Warren were listed as living with them.8 James Wilson Jamison and Matilda Jane Spencer appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Beetown, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 22 June 1880.
