James Carson Jamison was born on 12 August 1778 at Franklin Co, VA.3,4,5 He was the son of John Jamison and Nancy Aitkins. James Carson Jamison married Rosanna Dawson on 26 December 1798.3

On January 1, 1800 a James Jamison purchased about 71 acres of land in Cabarrus Co, NC, on the east side of the Rocky River from a James Wilson.6 (Transcript). (Actual document).

In the 1810 Federal Census for Cabarrus Co, NC, we find a Jas Jamison with the following family: three males under 10; one male 10-15; one male 26-44; one male 45 & over; three females under 10; and two females 26-44. This is close to the ages I have for this family at this time with the exception of one male 45 & over; two females under 10; and one female 26-44. It almost looks like two families are living together. If you consider the fact that his father John and mother Nancy could have been living with them, and allow for the possibility that the second female in the 26-44 range really should have been in the 45 & over range, this looks like a good match.7

In the 1820 Federal Census for Cabarrus County, NC, page 142, line 29 is James Jamison with the following family: three males under 10; two males 10-16; one male 16-18; two males 16-26; one male 26-45; one female under 10; one female 10-16; one female 16-26; one female 45 & upward. These would be the exact ages of James and Rosanna and the children I have for them with the addition of one extra female age 16-26 who could be either Sally or Rosy, one of James's younger sisters.8

The family moved from Cabarrus County, NC around 1827 to Missouri, making the trip in covered wagons and arriving there on Christmas Day. They settled in Pike County on Guinn's Creek, three miles southeast of Paynesville. According to the article "James Carson Jamison" in the March 1943 issue of The Chronicles of Oklahoma, "James took up practically all the wild land on both sides of the creek from Smith's Mill to the south where it spread over the prairie." But according to the Missouri land patents, it was son John Jamison who secured 240 acres of land in sections 34 and 35 of Township 52N Range 1E.1,2

Rosanna died on 23 Sep 1833.1

James Carson Jamison married Elizabeth Wilson on 27 May 1835 at Pike Co, MO.3,9,10 In the 1840 Federal Census for Pike County, there is a James Jamison Sr. listed with his household containing one male age 60-69 and one female age 50-59. This would be the age of James and I believe this to be his entry.11

According to a cemetery reading of tombstones for the Jamison Cemetery in Lincoln County, Missouri, James died on 25 March 1845 at age 66. I question that date for two reasons. First, James died without a will and the earliest record found for his probate is a Bond of Administration (see below) dated February 2, 1846, almost 11 months after he was supposed to have died. Second, on August 27, 1845, a James Jamison appeared before the Justice of the Peace for Pike County, Missouri on behalf of William Sherwood to give testimony in William's claim for a Revolutionary War pension. As far as I know there was only one James Jamison that had close connections with the Sherwood family and that was our James. I believe James actually died some time between August 27, 1845 and February 2, 1846.12,13,14 He was buried at Jamison Cemetery, Lincoln Co, MO.12

On 4 Feb 1846 the following Bond of Administrator was filed with the State of Missouri, Pike County:

"James Jamison Estate. Bond of Administrator

Know all men by these presents that one James R. Patton is principal and James Anderson and Samuel Jamison as his sureties, are held and bound unto the State of Missouri in the sum of one thousand dollars for the true payment of which we do hereby bind ourselves our heirs, Executors, and Administrator. Witness our hands and seals this second day of February in the year 1846. The condition of the above bond is, that if James R. Patton, Administrator of the Estate of James Jamison deceased, shall faithfully administer said Estate, account for, pay, and deliver all money and property of said Estate, and preform all other things touching said Administration required by Law, or the order of any court having Jurisdiction then, the above bond to be void, otherwise to remain in full force.

James R. Patton
Samuel Jamison
Jas. Anderson

State of Missouri
County of Pike. James R. Patton being duly sworn, say that John D. Jamison, Elizabeth Patton, James L. Jamison, Samuel Jamison of the County of Pike, Adam Jamison & the heirs of Joseph Jamison in Wisconsin Territory and the heirs of Jane Carr of Rock Island Cty, Ill to the best of his knowledge and belief are the only heirs of James Jamison deceased, that said deceased died without a will, that he will make a perfect Inventory of and faithfully Administer all the Estate of said deceased, pay the debts as far as the assets will extend and the law direct and account for, and pay all assets which shall come to his possession or knowledge.

Subscribed and sworn to before me clerk
Pike County Court this 2 day Feb. 1846

A.H. Buckner, clerk

Recorded the 17th day of February 1846."13

Considering the heirs mentioned above, it is assumed that sons William Jackson and Ephraim Washington died without heirs and before their father.

John Davis Jamison was born on 6 October 1799 at NC; the 1850 and 1860 census says John was born in VA.2 He was the son of James Carson Jamison and Rosanna Dawson. He, his father and his brothers came from Cabarrus County, NC and settled approximately three miles southeast of Paynesville in Pike County, MO during the early part of the 1820's. Three land patents (the transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals) were issued to a John Jamison in the area around Guinn's Creek near Smith's Mill. I believe this to be John D. Jamison but I am not 100% certain at this time. The first patent, issued on 15 Jan 1827 was for 80 acres in the E 1/2 NW quarter of Section 34 in Township 52, Range 1E. The second patent was issued on 15 Feb 1828 for 80 acres in the W 1/2 SE quarter (same Section, Township and Range). The third patent, for 80 acres, was issued on 13 Oct 1835 in the E 1/2 SW quarter of Section 35 (same Township and Range). Here is a map showing where the land would have been located using a plat map from the 1870's. I have also included copies of the actual land patents.

John married Mary Ann (Polly) Gilliland, daughter of John Gilliland and Charity Richardson, on 12 November 1825 at Union township, Lincoln Co, MO.3 John Davis Jamison appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Pike Co, MO, with a household listed as one white male under 5 (James Weston), one white male 30 to 40, and one white female 20 to 30.4

He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Pike Co, MO, with a household listed as one male between 10 and 14 (son James Weston), one female under 5 (daughter Catherine Elizabeth), one female between 5 and 9 (daughter Matilda) and one female between 40 and 49 (his wife Mary Ann (Polly) Gilliland).5

Sometime between the 1840 Census and the 1847 WI State Census he and Mary Ann moved to Wisconsin.

John and Mary Ann appeared on the 1847 WI State Census for Patch Grove, Grant County showing 2 males and 5 females.6 In 1850, they appeared on the Federal Census of District No. 24, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 23 September 1850. Their children Catherine Elizabeth and Nancy were listed as living with them.7 In 1855 and 1858 there were three land patents issued to them in Grant County - two to John D. and one to Mary. John Davis Jamison and Mary Ann (Polly) appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Beetown, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 28 July 1860, reporting the family owned real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $100.8

According to 'The Jamison History' by Sarah Melvina Devaney, John first went to Wisconsin, then to Montana and later to Vancouver, B.C.9

I did not find John in the 1870 census for Grant County, WI. I do not know if he actually did move to Montana or Vancouver or if he is dead by then.

Adam Jamison
Adam Jamison was born on 15 August 1803 at Cabarrus Co, NC.1 He was the son of James Carson Jamison and Rosanna Dawson. He resided there until 15 years of age when he moved to Pike Co, MO with his parents and siblings.2 Adam Jamison married Nancy Sherwood, daughter of William Sherwood and Mary "Polly" Bradley, on 8 April 1830 at Pike Co, MO.3,4

In the 1840 Federal Census for Pike County, there is an Adam Jamison listed with his household containing two males under 5; one male 30-39; and one female 20-29. These would be the ages of Adam and his family and I believe this to be his entry.5

In 1845 Adam and Nancy moved to Johnson Co, IL and in 1847 they went to Grant Co, WI and settled in the village of Beetown. Adam was a miner and farmer for many years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church; was Justice of the Peace for two terms; Constable for two terms; and School Director for two terms. In politics he was considered a Democratic.2 Adam and Nancy appeared on the 1847 WI State Census for Beetown in Grant County showing they had 5 children - 3 boys and 2 girls.6

Adam Jamison and Nancy Sherwood appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 24, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 23 September 1850. Their children James Wilson, John Alexander, Nancy Jane, Warren Adam, Mary Rosanna and Martha Caroline were listed as living with them.7

Between the years of 1855 and 1858 Adam applied for three land patents for Grant County, WI. The first patent was issued on November 10, 1855 and was for 40 acres in the NE quarter of the NE quarter of Section 31, Township 4N, Range 4E. Two other patents were issued to Adam, both on June 1, 1858. One was for 80 acres (S1/2NE quarter of Section 31, Township 4N, Range 4W) and the other for 40 acres (SWNW quarter of Section 32, Township 4N, Range 4W).

The 1860 Federal Census, enumerated 28 July 1860, show Adam and Nancy in Beetown, Grant Co, WI reporting the family owned real estate valued at $2500 and personal property valued at $275. Their children John Alexander, Warren Adam, Mary Rosanna, William Henry and Sara Elizabeth were listed as living with them.8

Adam and Nancy were on the 1870 Federal Census of Village of Beetown, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 27 July 1870, reporting the family owned real estate valued at $4000 and personal property valued at $300. Their children Sara Elizabeth and William Henry were listed as living with them.9

They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Beetown, Grant Co, WI, enumerated 21 June 1880, with Adam listed as a paralytic. Their daughter Sara Elizabeth was listed as living with them.10

Adam died on 27 June 1882 at Grant Co, WI, at age 78.11 He was buried at Beetown Cemetery, Beetown, Grant Co, WI.11

On the back of the photo for Adam is written "James Adam Jamison father of James Wilson Jamison came from North Carolina in covered wagon to Franfurt, Mo." It is not known who wrote that note but it appears that Adam's full name is James Adam.12
