John Gilleylen1,2

M, #2894, b. between 1764 and 1780
Last Edited=25 Aug 2017
John Gilleylen was born between 1764 and 1780.1 He was the son of William Gilleylen and Jane Liggett.1 In the will of his grandfather Lodowick Liggett, dated December 9, 1780, he was to receive 10£ when he reached the age of 18.1 In 1785, John was placed under the guardianship of his grandmother Hester.3 On January 8, 1784, John Ross Key sold to John Gilleylen, John's grandfather, a piece of land, the conveyance being defective and therefore not recorded. Then, on September 28, 1797, John, being the grandson and heir-at-law of John Gilleylen, for and in consideration of the sum of £5 was sold, by John Ross Key, part of a tract of land called Epping Forest and part of a tract of land called Neglected for a total of 202 acres.4

John Gilleylen appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Frederick County, Maryland, with a household listed as three males under 10, one male 26-44, one female 10-15, one female 26-44, and five slaves.5 On May 12, 1815, Daniel Fundarburg sold John, and another man by the name of Joseph Hughes, Lot no. 10 in Lewistown, Frederick County, Maryland for $40.6 He appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Taneytown, Frederick County (now Carroll County), Maryland, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 45 & over, one female 26-44, one female 45 & over, and nine slaves, with one person engaged in agriculture.7 On October 1, 1825, John sold one negro slave girl age four named Henrietta to William R. Gillelen for $50. William R. Gillelen was most likely William Gillelan and was possibly a son.8

John Gilleylen appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Taneytown, Frederick County (now Carroll County), Maryland, with a household listed as one male 10-14, one male 20-29, one male 50-59, and five slaves.9 On March 30, 1831, John sold 51¼ acres of land from two tracts (Epping Forest and Neglected) to Jacob Zumbrum for $565.10 On June 9, 1832, John liberated from slavery one of his slaves, 7 year old Letty Myers, to take place when she reached the age of 16 years old.11 On April 8, 1833, John sold 150 acres of land, being part of the tract of land called Epping Forest and Neglected, to William Koons for $1000.12

There is a possibility that John married a second time to Mary Elizabeth Wildasin. According to the book "Early Families of Frederick County Maryland and Adams County Pennsylvania" by Steve Gilland, John and Mary had one son by the name of John. He was born June 2, 1835. See John Gilland.13

Gilleland died on 8 May 1890 at Keokuk County, Iowa, at age 57.2 She was buried at Doggett Cemetery, Lancaster township, Keokuk County, Iowa.2

According to a biographical sketch on one of her sons, Eugene Doggett, Mary's parents were James and Susan who were both natives of Indiana. Some researchers have said that Polly Karnes full name was Mary Susannah Karnes which, if correct, would account for the discrepancy in names.5
