If he was indeed the son of John Gilliland and Susannah Harris, then he would have had to have been born in North Carolina.) He married Serrena Mary Herron on 15 July 1832 at Bartholomew County, Indiana.3 John Brookins Gilliland and Serrena Mary Herron appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Prairie township, Tipton County, Indiana, enumerated 16 September 1850. Their children A. M. E., John Frank, James, Malinda, Francis Marion, George Washington, Jane, Catherine and Wesley J. were listed as living with them.4 John Brookins Gilliland married Martha Ann Shoemaker after 25 December 1857 at Wapello County, Iowa.5,1 John Brookins Gilliland and Martha Ann Shoemaker appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cass township, Wapello County, Iowa, enumerated 4 June 1860. Their children A. M. Their children Harriet C. and Lydia A. were listed as living with them.4 Francis Marion Gilliland and Wealthy Cook appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Washington County, Nebraska, enumerated 15 June 1880. Their children Harriet C., Lydia A., Susanna, Rosa, John Edward, M. and Louis were listed as living with them.5 Francis Marion Gilliland and Wealthy Cook appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Blair township, Washington County, Nebraska, enumerated 19 June 1900. The following obituary appeared in a local paper:

F. M. Gilliland died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dave Lane, at 2 o 'clock last Saturday morning and the funeral was held at the Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. C. M. Foreman officiating. Francis Marion Gilliland was born in Indiana March 23rd, 1839, and was therefore, 80 years, 7 months and 29 days old at the time of his death. When a young man he moved with his parents to Iowa, where he was married to Miss Wealty Cook 53 years ago the 24th of last June. Ten years later they moved to Nebraska and have made their home in and near Blair ever since. To this union six children were born, five daughters and one son. Mrs. Arch McManigal of Decatur, Mrs. Abner Puffer of Tekamah, Mrs. Dave Lane of this city, Mrs. Jas. Montgomery of Oklahoma City, and John Gilliland of Tekamah. He leaves two brothers, Wesley and Martin, and two sisters, Mary Gilliland and Mrs. Serena Carter, all of Iowa. There are 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.2

Wesley J. Gilliland

Wesley J. Gilliland was born in Indiana, September 25th, 1849 and departed this life June 26th, 1932. Age 82 years, 9 months and 1 day. He was united in marriage to Nancy Tadlock, October 1917. She preceded him in death ten years ago and since that time he had made his home here with his brother, who precede him in death only three days. He leaves to mourn his loss, one sister Rena McCarty of Ottumwa, Iowa, two half-brothers, David and Lewis of Grant City, Missouri, one half-sister, Mrs. Belle Robinson of Des Moines, Iowa, besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. Walter G. Lagle assisted in the song service by the Peterson sisters of Munterville who sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Does Jesus Care," " No Night There".

Interment was made in the family lot at Moravia Cemetery.9,2

     David M. Gilleland was born circa 1814 at Kentucky.1 Found a marriage for a David Gilliland to Mary Stout on 25 Nov 1836 in Greene County. Was this a first marriage of David's? According to general land office records at the Bureau of Land Management, a David Gilliland purchased 40 acres (NW¼ of the NW¼) in section 9 of Township 9N, Range 11W in Greene County, Illinois on December 2, 1839.2 He married Sarah Crain on 22 December 1844 at Greene County, Illinois.3 David M. Gilleland and Sarah Crain appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois, enumerated 26 September 1850. Their children Elnora Jane, John Luther and Ann Maria were listed as living with them.1 David M. Gilleland died circa 23 July 1854 at Greene County, Illinois.4

On August 7, 1854, Daniel Bowman appeared before the County Court of Greene County and declared the death of David. This started the probate process. Sarah, David's widow, asked the court that Daniel be made administrator of the estate, which he was.4

Larkin Gilleland was probably one of the two males age 10 to 14 listed in the household of his father, Samuel Gilleland, in the 1830 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois.3 Larkin Gilleland married Elizabeth Chaney, daughter of Moses Chaney and Elizabeth Gilliland, on 23 February 1837 at Greene County, Illinois.4,1 Larkin Gilleland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Mount Airy, Greene County, Illinois, with a household listed as one male 20-29, two females under 5, and one female 20-29.2 He died between 1846 and 1848 in the Mexican War.1,5

On January 5, 1850 Elizabeth, Larkin's widow, appeared before the county court of Greene County, Illinois and petitioned the court that she be made guardian of their minor children.      Sarah Jane Gilleland was born circa 1838 at Illinois.2 She was the daughter of Larkin Gilleland and Elizabeth Chaney.1 Sarah Jane Gilleland was probably one of the two females under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Larkin Gilleland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Mount Airy, Greene County, Illinois.3 Sarah Jane Gilleland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois, in the household of her mother Elizabeth Chaney.2 Sarah Jane Gilleland married Alfred W. Schuyler on 19 August 1855 at Greene County, Illinois.4 Sarah Jane Gilleland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois, in the household of her mother Elizabeth Chaney.5 Sarah Jane Gilleland married J. D. Sheppard on 30 January 1862 at Greene County, Illinois.6 Sarah Jane Gilleland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Rockbridge township, Greene County, Illinois, enumerated 6 June 1900.7 She was listed as Sarah J. Richards although I can find no marriage for her to a Richards.
