Robert Gilliland1

M, #2532, b. between 1741 and 1750
Last Edited=16 Sep 2017
Robert Gilliland was born between 1741 and 1750.2,1 He was the son of John Gilliland.3 Robert Gilliland married Sarah ?3 On April 15, 1784, Robert purchased 300 acres of land on both sides of Hogan's Creek, a branch of the Dan River, from James Bates for £215. At that time, the land was located in Guilford County, North Carolina. It would later be in Rockingham when that county was formed in 1785.4 Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, enumerated 1790, with a household listed as one male 16 & over, three males under 16, and five females.5 He appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 10, two males 16-25, one male 45 & over, one female under 10, one female 10-15, and one female 26-44.1 He appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male 16-25, one male 26-44, one male 45 & over, one female under 10, two females 16-25, and one female 45 & over.6

On November 5, 1811, articles of agreement were drawn up between Robert and a Nancy Goff. The articles stated that whereas "Robert Gilliland of the County & State aforesaid have become very old and not able to support myself by Bodily labour, and whereas Nancy Goff hath lived in my family for thirty five years, during which time, great part of which, I have been a widower, her attention and industry in raising & supporting my young children, requires that I should make some provision as a recompense for her uncommon services aforesaid, and further, that after my decease she should have a home during her life and not become charitable to the County."7 (A descendant of William Goff, Nancy Goff's son, was yDNA tested and discovered he was genetically a Group 1 Gilliland.)

Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 45 & over, one female under 10, one female 10-15, and two females 26-44.8 On August 22, 1820, Robert sold 61 acres of land on Hogans Creek in Rockingham County, North Carolina to Martin Roberts for $50.9 On March 21, 1822, Robert sold another 54 acres of land in Rockingham County, North Carolina to Martin Roberts for $150.10 Then on February 20, 1826, Robert sold a third parcel of land of 200 acres to Martin Roberts. It was located on both sides of Upper Hogans Creek. It was most likely in preparation for moving to Indiana with his son Josiah.11

Robert Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Union County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male 16-19, one male 80-89, one female 15-19, and one female 30-39.2

John Gilliland1

M, #2533, b. 1 March 1774, d. 14 April 1873
Last Edited=16 Sep 2017
John Gilliland was born on 1 March 1774 at North Carolina.2,3,1 (According to the biographical sketch of John's son, George W. Gilliland, that appeared in the History of Bartholomew County, Indiana published in 1888, John was from Virginia.)4 He was the son of Robert Gilliland and Sarah ?1 John Gilliland was probably one of the three males under age 16 listed in the household of his father, Robert Gilliland, in the 1790 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina.5 John Gilliland married Susannah Harris, daughter of Daniel Harris and Juriah ?, on 26 February 1797 at Rocky Springs, Rockingham County, North Carolina.6,7 John Gilliland appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as one male under 10, one male 16-25, one female under 10, and one female 16-25.1 In the will of his father-in-law, Daniel Harris, dated February 15, 1801, John was left 100 acres of land in Rockingham County where Daniel Harris was then living. The will was probated in the 1804 August Session.8 (Even though I have looked through the Grantor/Grantee Index for Rockingham County, I have not been able to find the deed related to this transaction or a deed for the land being sold at a later date.) He appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 26-44, three females under 10, one female 10-15, and one female 26-44.9 John enlisted on November 28, 1814, Captain G. W. Baker's Company, North Carolina Militia, in the War of 1812. He was discharged on February 22, 1815.6 He appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a household listed as two males under 10, one male 10-15, one male 16-18, one male 18-25, one male 45 & over, one female under 10, two females 10-15, and one female 26-44 with four persons engaged in agriculture.10

According to the biographical sketch of his son, George Washington Gilliland, which appeared in the 1888 publication of the History of Bartholomew County, Indiana, John and his family moved from North Carolina to Union County, Indiana around 1823 and then in 1828 they moved to Decatur County, Indiana. On May 6, 1829, John obtained a patent for 80 acres of public land that he purchased in Decatur County, Indiana.11 Then on April 17, 1833 he received two additional patents (of 80 acres each) for land he had purchased located in the W½ of the SW¼ and NW¼ of Section 17 in Township 10N of Range 8E, also in Decatur County, Indiana.12

John Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Decatur County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male 60-69, one female 10-14, and one female 60-60.13 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Haw Creek township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, enumerated 21 November 1850, living in the household of his son George W. and his family.3 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Haw Creek township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, enumerated 21 June 1860, living in the household of his son George W.14 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Haw Creek township, Bartholomew County, Indiana, enumerated 5 August 1870, living in the household of his son George W. and his family.15 He died on 14 April 1873 at Bartholomew County, Indiana, at age 99.2 He was buried at Swinney Cemetery, Decatur County, Indiana.2

The children I have listed for John and Susannah are based on marriage and census records. In the 1840 Federal Census for Decatur County, Indiana, Robert Gillaland, Wm. Helmack, Jesse Barker, John Gillaland, and Geo. W. Gillaland are listed next to each other. Also on the same page is John Helmack. John, age 60-69, is our subject. George W. is his son and Robert is most likely also a son. From the Indiana State Library Genealogy Database we have the following marriages:

Jane Gilleland to William Helmick, April 5, 1826, Union Co, IN
Margaret Gilleland to John Helmick, December 11, 1827, Union Co, IN
July Ann (Julie Ann) Gilleland to Jesse Barker, September 28, 1830, Union Co, IN

Jane and Juliann appear to be daughters but I don't believe Margaret is. First, Margaret and her husband, John Helmick, are listed a number of households from the others who are grouped together. Second, in 1870 she and John are living in Appanoose County, Iowa. Living with them is Mary Scott, age 100, born in North Carolina. There was a Mary Gilliland who married Robert Scott on April 19, 1827 in Union County, Indiana. As mentioned above, Margaret Gilleland and John Helmick were also married in Union County, IN in 1827. Margaret is young enough to be Mary's daughter. Is she? Is Mary's marriage to Robert Scott her second?
