There's a good possibility that John was the son of James Gilliland.
     John Gillilland was born on 25 April 1785 at North Carolina.2,3 He married Sarah McCurry on 19 July 1813 at Barren County, Kentucky.4,1

On 5 August 1834, John was issued a Land Patent in Cass County, Indiana of 80 acres located in the W½NE¼ of Section 30, Township 28N, Range 3E.5 On 15 March 1837, he was issued another Land Patent in Cass County of 40 acres located in the NE¼NE¼ of Section 25, Township 28N, Range 2E.6 Then on 20 March 1837 John, along with his son Edward, was issued yet another Land Patent in Cass County of 124.30 acres located in the NW¼ of Section 30, Township 28N, Range 3E.6 On September 21, 1838, John sold the 40 acres in Section 25, T28N, R2E to his son Edward. He also sold 44 acres to Edward that he owned jointly with him in Section 30, T28N, R3E for $200 (recorded in Deed Book C, page 161) and in turn purchased from Edward 40 acres of land for $100 from that jointly owned land patent (Book C, page 144). That same day he then sold two 80 acre parcels (E½NW¼ and W½NE¼) to Moses Aldrich for $1200 (Book C, page 450.)7

On October 3, 1838, John purchased Lots 1 & 2 consisting of 194 acres of land in Miami County, Indiana, located in the N½NE¼ of Section 26, T29N, R4E, from William Bain for $600.8 John Gillilland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Perry township, Miami County, Indiana, with a household listed as one male 10-14, two males 20-29, one male 50-59, one female under 5, two females 5-9, one female 10-14, one female 20-29, and one female 40-49 with three persons engaged in agriculture.9 On 25 June 1841, John Gillilland was issued two Land Patents in Miami County, Indiana, the first being 40 acres and located in the SE¼SE¼ of Section 23, Township 29N, Range 4E and the second being 80 acres located in the W½SW¼ of Section 24.10,11

John Gillilland and Sarah McCurry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Perry township, Miami County, Indiana, enumerated 9 September 1850. Their children James, Elizabeth, Phoebe and Laura Ann were listed as living with them.12 On April 22, 1852, John sold 40 acres of his land to the Bedgelege heirs.8

John Gillilland and Sarah McCurry appeared on the 1856 IA State Census of Plattville township, Mills County, Iowa, enumerated 1856. Their daughter Laura Ann was listed as living with them.13 John Gillilland and Sarah McCurry appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Lyons township, Mills County, Iowa, enumerated 30 June 1860. Their daughter Laura Ann was listed as living with them.14 John Gillilland and Sarah McCurry appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lyons township, Mills County, Iowa, enumerated 11 August 1870.3 John Gillilland died on 3 May 1873 at age 88.2 He was buried at Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa.2 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)
