MERVIN FRANCIS GILLILAND
“Merv” passed to heaven on April 1 after a full 90 years of life. Born in 1922 to Frank and Louise Copp Gilliland, Merv grew up in Kalihi and Kaimuki. He enjoyed summers diving, fishing, and working at his Grandpa’s ranch in Maili and later at the family beach house at Mokapu. Merv was a Roosevelt Rough Rider, Class of 1940, he attended U.H. and was a U.S. Army veteran. In 1957, Mervin married Olga Maria Vanderborght who was originally from Belgium. Merv and Olga truly enjoyed their 55 years together in Hawaii nei, raising a family, hosting parties for family, friends and visitors from afar, travelling to Europe and other destinations. Merv retired as an Amfac Executive Vice President in 1986. Over a 35 year career, he covered much ground participating in development efforts on former Oahu Sugar lands from Halawa to Waikele, and and outer island projects including the Waiohai Hotel on Kauai, The King Kamehameha Hotel in Kona and the Ka’anapali Resort. Mervin is survived by his loving wife Olga, brother Leroy, sons Mark and Guy (Sherry), daughter Elizabeth (Jess) Snow, grandchildren Michele, Marcus Aukai, Marin Gilliland and Annie Ilikea and Ryder Snow. Please join us at Merv’s Celebration of Life on the Windward side, Saturday May 11, at the Koolau Center beneath the Pali Lookout, situated on Kionaole Road, just off the Kamehameha Hwy and H-3 interchange. Visitation from 10:00 to 11:15, Service from 11:15 to 12, and Pa’ina till 2:00. Aloha attire.1

Franklyn Wells Gilliland, 93, of Des Moines died Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Altoona, IA. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul of which he was a lifetime member. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery.

Frank was born on June 4, 1921 to the late Charles and Abbie (Wells) Gilliland and grew up in Des Moines where he graduated from North High School. He went on to earn his BS degree in Architectural Engineering from Iowa State before serving in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant JG during World War II.

Following his service, Frank and Ida Lorraine Higbee were married at St. John's by the Campus Church in Ames on July 19, 1947, and their family grew to be blessed by five daughters. They made their home in Des Moines where he established his business as a home builder.

Frank was a member of the Capitol Masonic Lodge No. 110, Des Moines Scottish Rite Bodies, Za Ga Zig Shrine, and the Eastern Star Chapter 89. He loved to sing and served as the president of the Shrine Chanters for many years. He was a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color Honored Degree from the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Throughout his life, Frank remained a loyal Iowa State alumnus and supporter of all Iowa State athletics.

Those left to cherish Frank's memory include his five daughters, Jeanne Andrews of Houston, TX, Marcia (Mel) Bancroft of Des Moines, Sandra (Nelson) Kraschel of Clear Lake, IA, Carole (Tom) Seibert of Marietta, GA, and Joanne (Tom) Dixon of Eagan, MN. His legacy continues through his 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren including: Angela Hild with her husband, Joey, and their three children; Michael Andrews; Matthew Andrews with his wife, Heather and his three sons; Mark Bancroft with his wife, Leah, and their two sons; Morgan Merical with her husband, Kyle, and their two sons; James Kraschel; Kate Kraschel; Elizabeth Kraschel; Christopher Seibert with his wife, Stephanie, and their three children; Nicholas Seibert with his wife, Rachelle, and their two sons; Samuel Seibert with his wife, Felicia; Emily Seibert; Joseph Seibert with his wife, Stephanie; Abbie Seibert; Jennifer Dixon; and Michael Dixon. He is also survived by his niece, Lee Heathorn and nephew, Bill Eckard.

Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ida and sister, Betty Eckard.5
