James R. Gilliland, 80, of Coldwater, passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at The Laurels of Coldwater. Military honors will be presented at the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday at Fry Cemetery in Noble Township. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. James was born on Feb. 24, 1931, to Albert and Margaret (Sweron) Gilliland in Ecorse, Michigan. He served honorably in the U.S. Army. On April 17, 1959, he married Margaret Martin. She preceded him in death March 23, 1995. He had worked for McLouth Steel in Trenton for 20 years, retiring in 1975. James had lived in Wyandot for many years before moving to the Bronson area. He had resided in Coldwater for the past two years. Mr. Gilliland was politically active and served under Michigan Gov. William Milliken as an environmental adviser in the 1970s. He also served on several committees and ran for public office. James enjoyed going to garage sales, antiques and socializing. He also enjoyed spending time at area cemeteries and researching family genealogy. Mr. Gilliland is survived by his son, Greg Gilliland of Sturgis; his daughters, Marianne (Charles) Zerbe of Sturgis, Susan Regan of Tempe, Ariz., and Sue Benash of Carleton; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, James was also preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Albert, Glenn and Earl Gilliland.2

H. & Mary J. Michael and listed as Roy Michael.2 In June 1911, Roy's grandfather, J. H. (John) Michael, filed charges against James Lynch for allegedly selling liquor to Roy.3 In September, Roy was fined $50 and costs for carrying a concealed weapon.4 Then in December, Roy was fined $5 on a charge of disorderly conduct after a saloon fight.5
