     Robert Gilliland was born circa 1757.1 He married Jane ?1 Robert moved to the town of Fayette, Seneca County, New York shortly after its organization in 1800.2 His first acquisition of land occurred on July 28, 1817 when he purchased 116 acres (part of lot #30) in the military township formerly called Romulus, Seneca County, New York, for $2320.3 After that he bought and sold a number of properties as listed below.

March 9, 1825, purchased 50 acres in Lot #36, Town of Fayette (military township of Romulus) for $1000.4

March 27, 1828, purchased 80 acres in #3 and #4 of Lot #43, Town of Romulus, for $2000.5

May 24, 1828, purchased 40 acres in subdivision #5 of Lot #43, Town of Romulus, for $900.6

August, 22, 1830, purchased 112¼ acres in Lot #25, Town of Fayette, for $3367.50.7

May 11, 1839, sold 59+ acres, part of Lot #31, Town of Fayette, to his son, John, for $3214 and 39+ acres (part of the same Lot) to his son Wilson for $2085.17.8,9

May 22, 1842, sold 112¼ acres, part of Lot #25, Town of Fayette, to Barna Van Vleet, for $6000.10

On January 18, 1834, he made out his Last Will & Testament (which is included in this probate file). It listed his wife Jane, and children John, Hannah (Markel), Wilson, Samuel, James M., Jane, William, Margaret (Colvin) and Robert, Jr.1

Robert Gilliland died on 13 December 1842 at Fayette, Seneca County, New York.1,15 By the time his will was probated, his son Robert had died and William had moved to Indiana.15

     Wilson Gilliland was born circa 1811.2 He was the son of Robert Gilliland and Jane ?1 On May 11, 1839, Wilson purchased 39+ acres, part of Lot #31, Town of Fayette, from his father for $2085.17.3 When his father died he received 100 acres of land (subdivision #3 of Lot #31).1 On November 30, 1848, Wilson made out his Last Will & Testament.2 Wilson Gilliland died on 30 December 1848 at Seneca County, New York.4

On April 2, 1849, Isaac R. Kipp and Charles Gonger, as executors of Wilson's estate, sold two parcels of land (100 acres in subdivision #3 of Lot 31, and 39+ acres in subdivision #2 also in Lot 31) to Abraham & Garret Van Sickel for $5475.77.5

     Samuel Gilliland was born circa 1805 at New York.2 He was the son of Robert Gilliland and Jane ?1 Samuel Gilliland married Jane Van Gieson.2 In 1843, Samuel received 110 acres of land situated in Subdivision #5, Lot #31, Fayette, Seneca County, New York, from his father's will.1 On February 20, 1844, Samuel and Jane sold those 110 acres to Jacob and Betsy Farr of Seneca, Ontario County, New York for $3300.3 On March 11th Jane was paid the $1500 she had inherited from her father Paul Van Gieson in his will.4 On March 20th Jacob and Betsy Farr conveyed back to Samuel and Jane "for the natural life of his wife Jane" 41 of the original 110 acres of Subdivision #5, Lot #31 (except for 1 acre out of the southeast corner) for $1.00.5 And on December 17th Samuel, for and in consideration of $1.00, quit claimed unto Charles Gougers 60 acres of land in Subdivision #5, Lot #31, except for 9 acres belonging to Jacob Farr.6

     James M. Gilliland was the son of Robert Gilliland and Jane ?1 On March 14, 1844, James' siblings and their spouses, issued a quit claim deed to James for the 180+ acres of land (Subdivision 4, Lot 31) he was given per his father's will dated January 18, 1834.2 Then on July 25th, James sold that land to Jacob Garnett for $5400.3 On August 8th he purchased one acre of land in the town of Fayette, part of Lot #6, for $50.4 No other information is known about James.

     James Montgomery Gilliland was born circa 1836 at New York.1 He was the son of Robert Gilliland and Mary Duryea.1 James Montgomery Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Varick, Seneca County, New York, enumerated 14 September 1850, living with his sister Mary Jane in the household of his mother Mary and step-father Benjamin Stengle.3 On January 26, 1857, James purchased two parcels of land in Romulus township, Seneca County, New York, one consisting of 25 acres and the other 28½ acres, from his step-father, Benjamin Stengle, for $2500. On the same day, he sold to Benjamin for the same amount of money the two parcels of land, a total of 120 acres, that his grandfather Robert had willed to his father.4 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Varick, Seneca County, New York, enumerated 3 July 1860, a farmer, living in the Benjamin Stengle household.5 He married Anna Marion Alleman.6 James Montgomery Gilliland and Anna Marion Alleman appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Fayette, Seneca County, New York, enumerated 9 June 1880. Their children Foster A. and Julia Florence were listed as living with them.7 Shortly before his death James made out his Last Will & Testament in which he mentioned his children Foster, Robert and J. Florence and made his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Robert S. Riley his executors.8 James Montgomery Gilliland died on 21 July 1890 at Seneca County, New York.8

     Jane Van Gieson was born circa 1808 at New Jersey.1 She married Samuel Gilliland, son of Robert Gilliland and Jane ?.1 On February 20, 1844, Samuel and Jane sold those 110 acres to Jacob and Betsy Farr of Seneca, Ontario County, New York for $3300.3 On March 11th Jane was paid the $1500 she had inherited from her father Paul Van Gieson in his will.2 On March 20th Jacob and Betsy Farr conveyed back to Samuel and Jane "for the natural life of his wife Jane" 41 of the original 110 acres of Subdivision #5, Lot #31 (except for 1 acre out of the southeast corner) for $1.00.4
