Philip Johnson Gilliland1,2

M, #6209, b. circa 1799
Last Edited=11 Feb 2015
Philip Johnson Gilliland was born circa 1799 at Prince Edward County, Virginia.1,3 He was the son of William Gilliland and Nancy Johnson. Philip Johnson Gilliland was probably one of the two males age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, William Gilliland, in the 1810 Federal Census of Prince Edward County, Virginia.4 Philip Johnson Gilliland married Mary ?1 Philip Johnson Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Charlotte County, Virginia, with a household listed as two males under 5, one male 20-29, and one female 20-29.5 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Halifax County, Virginia, with a household listed as two males under 5, one male 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 30-39, two females under 5, and one female 20-29.6 He and Mary ? appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Northern District, Halifax County, Virginia, enumerated 13 December 1850. Their children William A., Jackson, Lucy A., Mary A., Joseph and Elijah were listed as living with them.1 His occupation was listed as carpenter.

Philip Johnson Gilliland married Mary Mason on 15 October 1855 at Halifax County, Virginia.7 Philip Johnson Gilliland and Mary Mason appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southern District, Halifax County, Virginia, enumerated 25 July 1860.8 Also living with them were Joseph Gilliland, age 25, and Martin Gilliland, age 12, presumably his sons from his first marriage (Martin was more than likely the Elijah Gilliland from the 1850 census record.) Note: There is also a listing on the 1860 census record, Halifax County, for a P. J. Gilliland, age 59, carpenter; Mary, age 59; and Eliza M., age 10, female. I believe this to be a second listing for Philip and Mary with Eliza M. actually being Elijah "Martin", the son you see in the other listing.
