Catherine Keeling1

F, #3457, b. 22 March 1833, d. 28 April 1914

Catherine Keeling was born on 22 March 1833 at Tennessee.1,2 She married Samuel Gilliland, son of John Berry Gilliland and Jane McFerren, on 4 July 1858.2 Catherine Keeling and Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bowen township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 15 August 1870. Their children Mary, Arminda, Samuel B. and Amanda were listed as living with them.1 Catherine Keeling and Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 5 June 1880. Their children Mindie J., Samuel B., Nancy C., Thomas and James M. were listed as living with them.3 Catherine Keeling and Samuel Gilliland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of War Eagle township, Madison County, Arkansas, enumerated 4 June 1900. Their son James M. was listed as living with them.4 Catherine Keeling died on 28 April 1914, at the home of her son J. M. Gilliland, at Muskogee County, Oklahoma, at age 81.2
The names and ages of the oldest children of Samuel and Catherine are not easy to determine. In the 1870 census they were listed as Mary, age 13 (b. ~1857); Arminda, age 11 (b. ~1859); Samuel, age 11 (b. ~1859); and Amanda, age 7 (b. ~1863). In the 1880 census they were listed as Mindie J., age 19 (b. ~1861); Samuel B., age 14 (b. ~1866); Nancy C., age 14 (b. ~1866); Thomas, age 11 (b. ~1869); and James M., age 9 (b. ~1871). It's obvious that Samuel B. had a twin sister but was her name Arminda or Nancy? And Mary, who was listed as the oldest in 1870, becomes Mindie J. in 1880. If marriage records could be found for the daughters it would help to clear things up.
