Elizabeth Gilliland1

F, #3376, b. circa 1795, d. before May 1854
Last Edited=16 Sep 2017
Elizabeth Gilliland was born circa 1795 at North Carolina.2 She was the daughter of Robert Gilliland and Sarah ?1 Elizabeth Gilliland was probably the female under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Robert Gilliland, in the 1800 Federal Census of Rockingham County, North Carolina.3 Elizabeth Gilliland married Martin Roberts probably just prior to the 1810 census, as her oldest child was just 15 years younger than her.1 Elizabeth Gilliland died before May 1854 at Rockingham County, North Carolina.1

Supporting evidence for why I believe Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Gilliland:

1) In the 1810 Federal Census for Rockingham County, North Carolina, Martin Roberts was listed right next to John Gilliland, son of Robert Gilliland, and six people away from Robert himself.

2) From 1820 to 1826, Martin Roberts purchased three parcels of land from Robert Gilliland.

3) Elizabeth and Martin's son, James Roberts, married Jane Moore. One of their daughters was named Gilliland "Gillie" Virginia Roberts. Gillie married John W. Powell on December 28, 1880 in Huntsville, North Carolina.4,5

John Gilliland

M, #3388, b. between 1801 and 1810, d. between 1844 and 1850
Last Edited=1 Dec 2012
John Gilliland was born between 1801 and 1810.1 He married Mary Turner, daughter of Aaron Turner and Sarah Watts.1 John Gilliland appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois, living two households from Aaron Turner and other families from Maury County, Tennessee, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 20-30, two females under 5, and one female 20-30.2 He appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Gibson County, Tennessee, next to his assumed brother Joel Gilliland and sister Millie Arnold, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 30-39, one female under 5, three females 5-9, and one female 30-39.1 He died between 1844 and 1850 presumably at Gibson County, Tennessee.1,3

According to the 1840 census record John and Mary had at least seven children: three sons and four daughters. Only five of those children can be accounted for in other census records. There's a good possibility that John was the brother of Joel Gilliland though no proof has been found yet. In the 1840 Federal Census for Gibson County, Tennessee they were found living next to each other. And John named one of his sons Joel.

Last Edited=1 Dec 2012
Mary Turner was born between 1801 and 1810, probably in South Carolina.1,2 She was the daughter of Aaron Turner and Sarah Watts.2 Her family settled in Maury County, Tennessee by 1820, living near the Gilliland/Arnold families. Her parents were members of the same Baptist church as Bethia Gilliland, apparent mother of Joel Gilliland, Millie Gilliland Arnold, Molly Gilliland Arnold, and perhaps her husband John.2

Mary Turner married John Gilliland.1 Mary Turner was probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her husband, John Gilliland, in the 1830 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois.3 Mary Turner was probably the female age 30 to 39 listed in the household of her husband, John Gilliland, in the 1840 Federal Census of Gibson County, Tennessee.1 Mary Turner appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois, enumerated 24 September 1850. Her children Sarah E., Samuel G., Joel B., Cyntha (Sintha) and Trecy were listed as living with her.4 They were living next door to her parents, Aaron & Sarah Turner. Mary Turner appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Walkerville Precinct, Greene County, Illinois, enumerated 29 August 1870.5 She and son Samuel appeared on the 1875 Kansas state census record for Franklin, Bourbon County, Kansas. They were listed as having come from Illinois.6 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Franklin township, Bourbon County, Kansas, enumerated 3 June 1880, living with her daughter Trecy and son-in-law, John Mitchell, and their family.7 She died after June 1880.2,7

Joel B. Gilliland1

Gilliland appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Macoupin County, Illinois, in the household of his mother Mary Turner.2 Joel B. Gilliland appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Greene County, Illinois, enumerated 4 August 1860, living with his sister, Cyntha, in the household of Cyntha Gilland.3 This Cyntha Gilland, that he was living with, was listed as being 70 years old and born in Virginia. There's a possibility that this was a mistake and that "Cyntha" was acually his mother Mary but we don't know for sure.

This is the last record that we have for Joel. He is not seen in any other census records. Did he join the Civil War and die in battle? He is not found in the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls. Did he return to Tennessee?
