Their children William T., Mary Susannah, Emma J., James Monroe and Nancy Ellen were listed as living with them.4 John Thomas Gilleland died on 30 January 1920 at Miller County, Missouri, at age 87.3 He was buried at Olean Cemetery, Olean, Miller County, Missouri.5 (For burial information see Find-a-Grave.)

The following obituary appeared in an unknown newspaper on February 4, 1920:

John Thompson Gilleland was born April 17, 1832 and departed this life January 30, 1920 being at the time of his death past 87 years of age. He was born and raised on the farm now owned by Henry Strother near Olean. He entered the land, now owned by Sam Russell and Monroe Gilliland, and built a home there and farmed until 1994 when he sold it to John W. Miller. He had formerly sold the Monroe Gilleland part to his son William. He then moved to Olean and made his home there until after the death of his beloved wife in Sept, 1918.

Mr. Gilleland was married Sept. 17, 1857 to Nancy Perlina Atkinson. To them six children were born, William T. Gilleland, of Oklahoma who departed this life in 1903, Mrs. J.W. Miller ofSummerville, Mo., Mrs. W.V. Spalding and Monroe Gilleland of Olean, Mrs. A.C. Stayton, of Barnett and Dr. J.L. Gilleland, of Pullman, Washington. There were 29 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.

Mr. Gilleland has made his home with his daughter, Mrs.A.C. Stayton since the death of Mrs. Gilleland.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilleland were always faithful church workers and always attended church services when their health would permit them. They gave themselves to Christ early in life and of them it can be truly said, “They have fought a good fight, they finished their work, they kept the faith.” Their good example will be remembered by all who knew them because they were always ready to give the helping hand and a kind word of encouragement to everyone, ever ready to help the sick and afflicted inevery way they could; always devoted, kind and helpful to their children, neighbors and friends.

Mr. Gilleland ws confined to his bed since a year ago Christmas and part of the time suffered from ailments of old age. He was patient and did not complain. The end came peacefully as he passed quietly away willing and ready to go at the Master’s call and perfectly conscious until the last. May we all be as well prepared to meet the final call as these dear people were is my prayer.

Owing to so much sickness and flu, the relatives decided to have the funeral sermon preached later and announcement will be made. “Nearer My God to Thee” was sung softly as the body was tenderly lowered to its last resting place by the side of his dear wife he loved so devotedly and a prayer was offered by his nephew.3
