Ellsworth Handbill Photo
This handbill depicts the death of Elmer Ellsworth, the first Union officer
killed during the Civil War. These were widely distributed to encourage
support for the war effort. Ellsworth was considered to be such a hero
that many babies born at the time were given Ellsworth as a first or middle
name in his honor. Towns such as Ellsworth WI were also named after
him. |
