Squire Elmore Putney b. 22 Feb 1849, Henniker NH, occupation Labor leader,
m. 22 Oct 1876, in Lowell MA, Alice Jane Ellsworth, b. 6 Nov 1854, Wentworth
NH, d. 10 Feb 1896, Lowell MA. Squire died 19 Aug 1914, Lynn MA. Squire Elmore's
birth record has not been located. His first marriage certificate lists Henniker
NH as his birthplace but the second lists Warner NH. The date may have been
1848. The 1860 census lists him as "Elmore Putney, 11 years old." Squire
Putney was a prominent figure in the Socialist movement. He was a machinist
by trade, and once was a Candidate for governor of the Socialist Labor Party.
He worked in the textile mills in Lowell and helped to unionize shoe factories
in Mass. He is mentioned several times in "Socialism and the Workers
in Mass. 1886-1912" by Henry Bedford. (U. Mass Press).
