Catharina Elizabeth Uys

F, b. 31 January 1868, d. 28 May 1955
Research-Note*
According to family lore Catharina and her first husband, van der Merwe, had 2 daughters; one, allegedly, died young and the other died at age 21 "just before she was to marry". It was established that Catharina indeed had a daughter, Dina Margaretha van der Merwe. According to the British Concentration Camps database (BCCD) at the web address http://www.lib.uct.ac.za/mss/bccd/ , during the Anglo Boer War (ABW) while her husband, Johannes Els, was on commando with the Boers, Catharina, her 3 sons and the daughter, Dina van der Merwe, were interned in the Middelburg (Transvaal) Concentration Camp for 5 months before they were moved to the Merebank Camp south of Durban (note: her two youngest children Catharina and Barend were born after the ABW). Catharina is recorded as "Mrs. Johannes Marthinus Els": http://www.lib.uct.ac.za/mss/bccd/Person/81338/Mrs_Johannes_Marthinus_Els/
They, at that stage, lived on the farm Morgenzon, district Bethal.

Shortly after the ABW, Dina Margaretha van der Merwe apparently contracted the disease leprosy which was then considered a socially unacceptable disease that was preferably not talked about if it occurred in a family. By 1909, at age 22, Dina was confined to the "Pretoria Asylum" (probably the previous Westfort Leper Asylum, now the Westfort (Sometimes Fort West) Institute, north of Lotus Gardens, Pretoria West. On 9 September 1909 the Assistant Colonial Secretary of Transvaal wrote as follows to the Colonial Secretary, Orange River Colony:

"A White leper named Dina van der Merwe in the Pretoria Asylum wishes to know whether her parents named J. M. Els and Katrina Elizabeth Els, nee Uys, are living in De Villiersdorp, District Vrede, O. R. C. She has heard that they are residing on ground belonging to Mathewis Pieters in the above-mentioned place; and I have the honour to ask whether you will be good enough to cause enquiries to be made in this connection and furnish me with the result"

On 28 September 1909 the Under Colonial Secretary of the Orange River Colony replied:

"With reference to your letter No. 1/16232 of the 9th instant, I have the honour to state that the parents of the white leper Dina van der Merwe are living, and reside at present in the town of Villiers, Frankfort District, Orange River Colony." (VAB CO VOL. NO. 528 REF. 276/21). They seem to have lived in Paul Roux later.

When her first husband, Andries, died Catharina inherited their farm. Her second husband, Johannes Els, however, sold the farm and bought an ox wagon and a team of oxen with which he moved from one place to another. Johannes had the "wander lust" and moved around a lot with his family from place to place in the Free State and Transvaal. At one stage he was building houses in Villiers and at one stage he was quite a successful brick-maker in a booming mining town (probably Welkom). He took his eldest son, Nicolaas, out of school (Standard 3) to assist with "klei trap" (pugging the brick clay with his feet) but after a year Johannes swopped the brickworks for a wagon and team of oxen and "trekked" again. His sons, who got tired of moving from place to place and frustrated that they are not getting settled or building up any wealth, later forced him to sign a lease for a farm for at least one year. He did, but on the day that the contract expired, he packed his wagon and trekked. He just could not get settled. He seems to have had the "wander lust" and he and his family lived on many places in Transvaal and the Free State, amongst others, they lived in Vrede in the Free State for some time. His pride, according to his son, Nicolaas, was his "kapkar" and horses.

Johannes and his sons were "bywoners" (farm hands) and worked for other farmers for part of the crop. During the 1950's until her death on 28 May 1955, Catharina lived with her eldest son, Nicolaas and his family on their farm Katrinasrus, district of Vrede in the Free State.
