Little is known about Johan Merthien Eltz, known in South Africa as Johannes Martin Els (Also Jan and sometimes Marthinus). He was probably born about 1744 and arrived in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa by about 1763 from Stendal, Germany.
Stendal is situated on the Uchte, a tributary of the Elbe, approximately 100 km west of Berlin and 55 km north of Maagdeburg, Germany. In 1700 Stendal was in the kingdom of Prussia in the province of Sakse, generally referred to as Prussian-Sakse to distinguish it from the electoral princedom of Sakse. Although Stendal was, by 1760, known as a fertile agricultural region with mining activities, Prussia was, between 1756 and 1763 involved, on the side of Great Brittain and Hannover in the Seven Year War against France, Sachse, Austria, Sweden and Russia. This was the first war in history fought on a worldwide scale. In this period Johannes Martin must have been between the ages of approximately 12 and 19 years. Prussia was financially severely affected by the war and prospects for its youth were poor. During this war the Netherlands, as a neutral country, benefited and prospered. Many young Prussians, including Johannes Martin, probably fled to the Netherlands and its colonies in search of a future.
On 14 January 1774 the loan farm, Jagersrivier, situated east of Oudtshoorn between the Groot Swartberge and the Kammanassieberge on the Olifants River, between De Rust and Barandas in the Klein Karoo, was allotted to Els as grazing land. He had to pay the usual leasehold of 24 Rixdollars per annum to the magistrate in Swellendam. He was also obliged to deliver free to the Castle in Cape Town 10% of his wheat-harvest and deliver the receipt therefore to the magistrate. By 7 April 1787 he had abandoned the farm as grazing rights on the farm was granted on this date to fellow farmer Douwe Gerbrand Stein.

Els fell in arrears with the payment of his debt on the land. He was in arrears for a period of 12 years and 3 months. D.G. Stein was also in arrears for a period of 6 years on payments on a previous farm, before he was granted grazing rights on Jagersrivier. This was recorded in the "Resolutions of the Council of Policy of Cape of Good Hope" on 24 July 1788. First Clerk Horak was found guilty of misconduct and negligence for having recorded these (and other) debts as paid and having issued receipts in respect thereof while the debts were in fact not paid. The commission that investigated the actions of Horak also recommended that farmers be prohibited from leaving their farms and letting it to others.

Johannes Els is recorded by Dr. J. Hoge in "Personalia of the Germans at the Cape 1652-1806", but is not mentioned in "Die Deutschen am Kap unter der Holländischen Herrschaft 1652-1806" by Prof. Dr. Edward Moritz.

His wife, Anna Maria Pieterse (baptised on 17 December 1747 in Stellenbosch, died before 22 May 1779) is the illegitimate daughter of Willem Hendrikse by Elsje Gerrits ("Personalia of the Germans at the Cape, 1652-1806"; J. Hoge). Anna carried the surname of her stepfather, Johannes (Jantje) Peters, who probably brought her up from the age of about 1 or 2 years, following his marriage to her mother, Elsje.

Willem's descend is unknown. From J.A. Heese's "Die Herkoms van die Afrikaner, 1971" it can be deducted that he is probably Dutch.

Elsje's descend is also not known. According to the above publication of J.A. Heese she could be "non-white". Heese, however, seems unsure about this and puts a "?" behind his own contention that her daughter Anna Maria is "1/2 Dutch and 1/2 Non-white". No other source mentions anything about this. Elsje is, however, recorded in "South African Genealogies" as "Elsje Gerrits van die Kaap" which could reflect on her possible non-European decent. In "Groep Sonder Grense", 1984 and an article in "Die Vaderland" of 23 October 1985, following the publication of "Groep Sonder Grense", Prof. H. F. Heese lists "Els" as one of the South African surnames with "Euro-Indian" (probably slave ancestry), connections.

Elsje could possibly be an unrecorded daughter of Hermanus Gerrits and Anna Maria Brits. (Note that Elsje named her daughter "Anna Maria"; after her mother, Anna Maria Brits?). Hermanus's parents were Gerrit from Oldenburg and Susanna van Bambaser, the freed slave of Anthony van Angola. That would explain the alleged slave connection in Elsje Gerrits's ancestry. It should be noted, however, that this has not been confirmed. Elsje was, in fact, not mentioned as a daughter of Hermanus Gerrits and Anna Maria Brits in a study: "Gerrit Gerrits of Oldenburg and Susanna of Bambaser. An Early 18th century couple" by Margaret Cairns. (Familia Vol. XVII 1980 no. 3/4).

Research-Note*

In the early 1930's/1940's Nicolaas and Johanna lived on a farm called "El Dorado", situated on the De Langesdrift Road that leads off from the Vrede-Standerton Road. Nicolaas was the farm manger, working for a part of the crop, for the owner, a Mr. Frans Penning, who did not reside there at the time.

Nicolaas and his brother, Johannes (Gerhardus), jointly bought a farm measuring about 278 ha, a subdivision of the farm Wilgespruit, district Vrede, with the aid of a Government (Land Bank) loan. The farm is situated on the "De Langesdrift" road that leads to the farm "Donkerhoek" between Vrede and Standerton. The brothers called the farm "Katrinasrus", after their mother. Johannes later withdrew from the deal and Nicolaas had to carry the payments on the farm alone.

Then came the economic depression of the 1930's.Through the depression years, Nicolaas and his wife, Johanna, just managed to carry the interest on the loan in order not to lose the farm. In these years they were sometimes forced to sell sheep, chickens and turkeys that they raised on the farm to unscrupulous dealers at ridiculously low prices just to raise the funds needed to pay their interest. However, they succeeded in retaining the farm and eventually repaid the loan.

When Johanna's father died in 1943, she inherited a small amount of money and in 1950 she and Nicolaas bought the adjoining farm "Poppiesverdriet", measuring about 280. Together the two farms make up a viable economical agricultural unit.

They lived on Katrinasrus, where Nicolaas build a house from sandstone which he mined from the sandstone layers found in the spruit area of the farm. They farmed on the two farms for the greater part of their lives. The children all grew up there and went to school in Vrede. Nicolaas retired in about 1971. They then moved to a small farm that they bought in the Warmbaths district, on the Settlers Road. Later, when they became too old to manage even there, they moved to a house in Menlo Park, Pretoria, where they lived until his death on 31 October 1980.

They did not sell the Free State farms. They were initially leased to a neighbouring farmer, Chris Cronje and his sons. Later the farms were leased by their own eldest son, Johannes Marthinus, who decided to go farming and resigned as vice principle of a primary school in Boksburg. He initially leased the farms from his mother, who held a usufruct over the land, and his younger brother, Christiaan, who inherited Poppiesverdriet after Nicolaas's death in 1980. In 1981 Christiaan agreed to sell Poppiesverdriet to Johannes as both farms were needed to farm successfully. When Johannes retired from farming himself in about 2000, he sold the farm to the Cronje neighbour who previously rented it.
