| Research-Note* | In the early 1930's/1940's Nicolaas and Johanna lived on a farm called "El Dorado", situated on the De Langesdrift Road that leads off from the Vrede-Standerton Road. Nicolaas was the farm manger, working for a part of the crop, for the owner, a Mr. Frans Penning, who did not reside there at the time. Nicolaas and his brother, Johannes (Gerhardus), jointly bought a farm measuring about 278 ha, a subdivision of the farm Wilgespruit, district Vrede, with the aid of a Government (Land Bank) loan. The farm is situated on the "De Langesdrift" road that leads to the farm "Donkerhoek" between Vrede and Standerton. The brothers called the farm "Katrinasrus", after their mother. Johannes later withdrew from the deal and Nicolaas had to carry the payments on the farm alone. Then came the economic depression of the 1930's.Through the depression years, Nicolaas and his wife, Johanna, just managed to carry the interest on the loan in order not to lose the farm. In these years they were sometimes forced to sell sheep, chickens and turkeys that they raised on the farm to unscrupulous dealers at ridiculously low prices just to raise the funds needed to pay their interest. However, they succeeded in retaining the farm and eventually repaid the loan. When Johanna's father died in 1943, she inherited a small amount of money and in 1950 she and Nicolaas bought the adjoining farm "Poppiesverdriet", measuring about 280. Together the two farms make up a viable economical agricultural unit. They lived on Katrinasrus, where Nicolaas build a house from sandstone which he mined from the sandstone layers found in the spruit area of the farm. They farmed on the two farms for the greater part of their lives. The children all grew up there and went to school in Vrede. Nicolaas retired in about 1971. They then moved to a small farm that they bought in the Warmbaths district, on the Settlers Road. Later, when they became too old to manage even there, they moved to a house in Menlo Park, Pretoria, where they lived until his death on 31 October 1980. They did not sell the Free State farms. They were initially leased to a neighbouring farmer, Chris Cronje and his sons. Later the farms were leased by their own eldest son, Johannes Marthinus, who decided to go farming and resigned as vice principle of a primary school in Boksburg. He initially leased the farms from his mother, who held a usufruct over the land, and his younger brother, Christiaan, who inherited Poppiesverdriet after Nicolaas's death in 1980. In 1981 Christiaan agreed to sell Poppiesverdriet to Johannes as both farms were needed to farm successfully. When Johannes retired from farming himself in about 2000, he sold the farm to the Cronje neighbour who previously rented it. | |
