| Note* | Mom, or 'Dodie' as Granddad Adkins usually called her, was a short, heavy set, loveable lady. As a child I remember how much comfort andlove was given by this lady and how fun it was to snuggle in her armswhen I was sick or had my feelings hurt. I can't remember my motherwith any thing but white hair. I know from pictures, she had verydark hair but I was told that her hair started turning when she was 20and by the time she was 30 it was white. Her eyes were blue and shestood all of 5'3' tall. We always kidded her that she was wider thanshe was tall. Since dad was gone so much of the time, mom became thedisciplinarian, a job she was not well suited for because of her softheart. There were, however, times we felt the sting of the open handon the 'place provided by the Lord.' I also remember times when mybrothers and I would 'wrestle' with mom, Jim would hold her and Billand I would smear butter between her toes. She pretended to beoutraged but secretly, I think she enjoyed the horse play from hersons. Mom was a smoker, as was my dad, but she became a 'chainsmoker' after brother Jim was drafted to serve in WWII. This practicecontinued until one night when she quit 'cold turkey.' This came aboutafter dad had his second heart attack. It seems that one evening momsaid, she was going to town (4 miles) to get another pack ofcigarettes. Dad seemed surprised since there was a pack and a half onthe table. He expressed his doubt about needing more cigarettesbefore morning. This aroused mom's anger and she threw the remainingpack across the room and vowed she would never smoke anothercigarette. She kept this vow for the rest of her life. I marveled ather resolve, especially in view of the stress she had during the finaldays of dad's life. I have been a smoker In the past and realize justhow hard that must have been. R.H.Ellis | |
