| Note* | [Working File.FTW] From 'Richard Ellis and his Descendants, 1888'. He said his father moved from Deerfield to Ashfield when he was threeyears old. July 19th, 1763 (records of Ashfield) he married MaryDimick. About this date he bought the farm 100 rods west of the cornerswhere his father first settled. He built a log house about 15 rods westof where the present farmhouse now stands, in which all his family wereraised. Remains of the log house were visible up to 40 years ago. About1793 the present house was built, in which he resided until his death. Hewas a man of quite large business capacity for his time. Besides farminghe engaged in the milling business. On Bear river, which runs thoroughthe north part of his farm, he had a saw mill, and lower down the stream, about 20 rods below the roadway bridge, was the old grist mill erected byhis father and the Smiths, which was later - about the time of theRevolutionary War - in his charge. He was one of the first to declarefor the Independence of the Colonies and to take up arms in behalf of thecause. At this day we can hardly appreciate the moral heroism requiredof the Colonists to break away from and resort to arms against the mothercountry. At first many of the old and influential residents of Ashfieldwere opposed to the rebellion, as they called it. Families were dividedand near and ear relatives opposed each other in the early part of theconflict. Some of the most noted and outspoken Tories of Ashfield hadsons who had already gone to the front in the patriot army, and had laiddown their lives in its service. Lieut. John Ellis was commissioned an officer in the war of theRevolution and did service during the whole conflict. He was severalengagements in Eastern New York about Saratoga and Lakes George andChamplain. From 1777 to 1780 he was a portion of the time, detailed forhome duty in raising recruits and provisions to carry on the war. In theAppendix will be found some interesting accounts left by him, bearing onthis subject. He was said to have been a man of good judgement and largeinfluence, which he exerted most judiciously in the support of the causeof independence. He understood and acted upon the highest principles ofliberty. At various times irresponsible but over-zealous patriotsproposed violence toward some of the leading Tories. Lieut. Elliscondemned this vigorously and declared that every man's liberty wassacred so long as he committed no overt acts of hostility to the cause ofindependence. About 1800 he visited Central New York, where he boughttracts of land on which two of his sons settled. About this time therewas quite an emigration from Ashfield, many of the residents seekinghomes in Cayuga and Onondaga Counties, New York. Among these wereseveral of the Ellises, Annables, Bartletts, Phillipses and others fromthe Ellis neighborhood in Ashfield... Lieut. John Ellis in personalappearance was rather short in stature, thick set and of a hardy andvigorous constitution. He was a Methodist in religious and a classleader, so called, among the members. Headstones in the Ellis buryingground mark the graves of himself and wife. From 'Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the AmericanRevolution' Volume 5 page 305 Ellis, John, Ashfield. I did wonder if in fact our Robert is connected with the Ellis who is prominent in the above book, whether he came out being a relative, also why did he return to Bideford? Was it for John's education, but Bideford National School was not exactly one of the great schools of England, or even Devon! It was built in 1825 and had 200 children. The National Society was Anglican of course., Witness=Robert Ellis |
