Preface

This is called the Elliotts of New England because the records (entries) are mostly from the early New England states OR the family lines originated in these states. All entries have the Elliott name, either by birth or through marriage. Information for this database was primarily collected in the late 1980s, early 1990s. All information I could find on Elliotts, of the various spellings, before 1850 is included. On marriages, data up through 1875 was included and deaths through 1900. Every source document I could find was reviewed. Cemeteries were “walked” and Elliott information recorded. With very few exceptions, all information in the database came from published sources. These publications were found from Salt Lake City to Denver and in towns throughout the New England states. I would expect that First Search would uncover most, if not all of the documents. No information was taken from the Internet nor did I use personal, unpublished genealogies.

The data was collected to help find the parents of Admiral Manley Elliott. The first record I had was of his marriage to Abiah Burton in Andover, Vermont, on 14 May 1812. Later census records would indicate he was born in 1792 or 1793 in New Hampshire. I have derived clues from this database of over 17,200 records but have not succeeded in finding his parents.

Over the last few years I have made it known to some that the database existed and that I would accept queries. Several have taken advantage of the offer and have benefited. One such query found an Edmund Elliott in Vermont that turned out to be the sixth generation from Edmund(1), the immigrant ancestor. I was able to send this individual the information on each generation back to the immigrant ancestor. Her problem is that she was looking to Virginia for his line and not to New England until she inquired of me.

Having done it for my personal use and to help others, I am now making this available both on-line and in CD-ROM forms for others to use. If the Elliott lines being researched came from New England origins and names or locations can be identified, there is a high probability that a hit can be made amongst the over 17,200 records. If that can be done, then there is a good chance of being able to trace the line back to an immigrant ancestor.

Once finding someone in the database, you will find where the information came from. Sources are given where, perhaps additional information can be gleaned. But, taking advantage of the full potential of the database, one can assemble ALL of the members of a family, to the extent the information is in the database. Then, there is a high probability that you will find the link to the next generation, whether going up or down the line. Considerable time was spent tracing the lines down from the immigrant, or early, ancestor and line and family designators are provided to help in this effort. [See Family Identifications to see how this can be accomplished.]

It is recommended that the other subjects from the Contents page be reviewed to clear up any confusion as to what is being included in each record and how this database can help you search for New England ancestors. Some fields were used for multiple purposes so it is important to understand what is included in the fields. It would be good to review the Explanation of Fields. If you have a “hit” on an ancestor of interest, be sure to read the Family Identification page. It will step you through the process finding the members of that family and of moving from generation to generation back to the immigrant (or earliest) ancestor. The Immigrant Ancestor page shows most of the early immigrant ancestors that I attempted to trace.

There is a second database, that of Elliott marriages in the early New England era. It has been built from the information in the Elliott New England Database (Names). It would be a good place to start your Elliott search and will give you the “family identification designators” to allow better search the Names database.
