Alexander Herren Resident of Jasper Co., GA., Centells Hil. Dist. Drew lot 39 section 7 in Early Co., in 1820 land lottery of GA. There was an Alexander Herren or Herrin in Wilkes Co., GA in 1790 who lived in Captain Hedlock's Militia District. 16 December 1807, Alexnader Herring of Hancock Co. bought from Daniel Grantham of Baldwin Co. for $1,000, 202-1/2 acres in Baldwin Co., 15th District Lot 24 on the water of Murder Creek. Alfred Herring Alfred Herring was shown on the 1860 census of Clinch Co., GA as a farmer with $250 value of real estate. He was 30 years old at the time putting him born in 1820 in GA. His wife was named Olive who was 30 years old also and children were James F. 10 years old, Anna J. 4 years old, and Mary E. 3 years old. Olive and all the children were born in SC. Also living with him was Sarah Herring, 60 years old, born in GA. As noted

On 9 Jan, 1805, Edward sold to Alexander McKie of Spartanburgh, 154 ac on waters of Lawson's fork bordering Crocker and Alexander McKie which was part of two tracts, 1 - granted in 1785 to William Turner Thomason who sold to Edward Herring and 2 - granted in 1804 to Edward Herring. Witnesses were George Thomason, Robert Benson, and William West Jr. Signed by Edward and Maryan (her mark). Recorded 5 Feb 1805. On Apr 6, 1807, Edward and wife Mary of Spartanburgh sold to John Gray of Spartanburgh 100 ac. On branches of Lawson's fork and east of ancient boundary bordering Arthur Crocker and Rainwater. Witnesses were William Herring and E. Herring (female). Signed by Edward and Maryan Herring. Witness oath of June 16, 1807 by William Herring to John M. Jones, and recorded 23 June 1807. The last will and testament of Edward Herring of Spartanburgh Dist., SC., dated 26 Jul 1811, recorded 14 Jul 1813, lists his wife as Marian and gives her all property and she is to divide amongst his children at her death. Will was witnesses by Jesse Mathis, William Cantrell, and Manning Barnes, and proven by Jesse Mathis 5 Jul 1813. Maryan Herring was listed as executrix. Elijah Herring 1790 The grand jury of Spartanburgh Co, SC, found a true bill against Elijah Herring for larceny. Later by request of the county attorney the indictment was quashed. Note: I received the following note on this item on 25 Feb 2002 from Rick Elliott (RichardCElliott@aol.com) of San Jose, CA. "Regarding your notes on Elizabeth A. Herring, daughter of William Herrring and Sarah Moulder and wife of Nedom L. Angier. I believe the Hendrick book is incorrect in stating she died 3 Feb 1882. Ancestry.com shows an entry in the 1889 city directory of Atlanta, GA for Elizabeth A. Angier (widow of Nedom L.) she was shown as boarding at 89 E. Mitchell. Gresham Herring The 1850 census of Walton County GA., shows that Gresham was 64 years of age, was a Baptist Minister, and was head of household of the 1,058th residence polled in the census. This would indicate that Gresham was born about 1786. His wife was named Elizabeth, was 61 years old, and was listed as being born in Virginia. This would make her born circa 1789. Children were listed as Lucy A., 35 years old, Caroline, 20 years old, and Sarah J., 18 years old. Birthdates would then be Lucy A., 1815, Caroline, 1830, and Sarah J., 1832. The 1840 census of Walton Co., GA, indicates that Gresham had two sons between the age of 10 - 15, three daughters between the age of 10 - 15, and two daughters between the age of 20 - 30. He lived in the Mountain District. Gresham also lived in Walton Co., when the 1830 census was taken and it indicated he had two sons between the age of 5 - 10, two daughters less than five years old, three daughters between the age of 10 - 15, and three daughters between the age of 15 - 20. (Note: The clerk often left off the s when meaning the word son of daughter to be plural so the above could be grandsons instead of grandson.) James Herring Shown on the sale bill as one of the purchasers of portions of the estate of Mrs. Elizabeth McPherson in November 1848 in Anderson Co., SC. Probably the same as James M. Herring as shown below. Other purchasers who are connected with Herrings elsewhere in these notes were James Burris, Samuel McGee, & Jesse C. McGee. Elizabeth appears to have been the wife of William mcPherson as his estate was inventoried, appraised, and sold in November of 1848 as well. See comments

Jesse Herring Jesse Herring of Jefferson Co., GA, made deed in Jefferson Co. on 17 Feb 1823, to Charles Miller of Henry Co., GA, Lot 90 of the 8th Dist., in Henry Co. Witnesses - William Parradice & William Livingston, JP. Source: Henry County GA Records, Deed Book A., as compiled by the Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. (Some Georgia County Records Vol 3). Jesse had drawn Lot 90 in the 8th dist. in the 4th day or 1821 land lottery of GA. He also drew Lot 153 in the 10th district in Monroe County. Jesse lived in Whighams military District of Jefferson Co. at the time of the land lottery. By him receiving two draws it would indicate that he was a married man, with wife and/or minor son under 18 and/or unmarried daughter, 3 year residence in GA, 3 year citizen of the United States, or that he was an orphan, father killed or died in Revolutionary War, War of 1812, or Indian War. Jesse Herring Jesse Herring, born in Anson Co., NC, received military discharge papers noted as follows: To all whom it may concern - Know ye that Jesse Herring, a private in Captain Sandy Donoho's Company Corps Artillery who was enlisted the thirteenth day of June Eighteen Hundred Twelve to serve five years is hereby honorably discharged from the Army of the United States by reason of expiration of his term of enlistment. Said Jesse Herring was born in Anson County in the state of North Carolina, is thirty years of age, six feet one inch high, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. Given at Fort Scott on Flint River Indian Nation this twelfth day of June eighteen hundred and seventeen, no field officer being present. This would put Jesse being born about 1787. Mary Herring The will of Mary Herring of Anderson District, SC., dated 11 Apr 1856 and probated 5 June 1865, mentions the real estate of her late husband, and children as being Mrs. Laura N. Brooks, Mrs. Sarah Ann Tilly, James M. Herring, Francis Herring, Jefferson Herring, Jesse Herring, and Elijah Herring. James M. Herring was to be the trustee for Sarah Ann Tilly, grandchildren were Francis A. Beaty, David Milton Beaty, who were children of her deceased daughter Rutha Ann Beaty. Executors were James M. Herring and John M. Burriss. A codicil dated 17 Nov 1857 released James M. Herring as trustee for daughter Sarah Ann Tilly, she to take her full share free from a trustee. also the book "Herring Family" by R. H. Hendrick indicates that Francis Herring was the husband of Mary. It also lists as a child J. Mercer Herring and states that John Tilly was the husband of Sarah Ann. It also indicates that Jesse M. Herring was dead but had left heirs in 1856. With this information this family would be as follows:

Herring, about to leave the state on a journey and having regard to the uncertainty of life . . . I will and direct that my executor and executrix . . . do proceed immediately to sell my shop furniture, medicines, instruments, . . . and to collect all the money due me . . . to my dear wife Mary Susan . . . I give to my wife all my interest in all the tract or parcel of land in the district of Spartanburgh, SC, commonly known as the Blundles Tract containing 236 acres, claimed jointly by Z. T. Westmoreland and myself under a verbal gift by my father . . . I give to my wife all plantation tools, household and kitchen furniture . . . William Herring Born 23 Mar 1799, the son of Stephen Herring and Rhoda Land Herring. Married Sarah Moulder on 1 Oct 1818, in Franklin Co., GA. Sarah was also called Sallie. They moved from Franklin Co to Fayette Co, GA, and raised a large family. Sarah was born 25 May 1798, and died April 16, 1874. William was a cotton planter, a Baptist, and known for his tenor voice. People would come for miles to hear him sing. Later in life he moved to Marthasville (now Atlanta), and went into the clothing business. He died 3 Aug, 1868.
