Humphrey VIII De Bohun Earl of Hereford

Served against the Scots at Bannockburn in 1314, where he was captured, and again at Berwick in 1319 and helped suppress a Welsh rising in 1316.....
Whereas his father was primarily lord of Brecon, Hereford spent much more time in Essex, particularily at Pleshey Castle, and at court. He was an intelligent and competent soldier, councillor and diplomat. He enlarged his estates and provided for his dependant siblings and children. A strong sense of honour and dynasty, conventional piety and generosity round off his character. Genuine conflicts of loyality, not bad faith, explain his political inconsistencies.
