Henry Spencer 1st Earl of Sunderland

Grandson of the Earl of Southampton, patron of William Shakespeare.
A loyal Royalist and trusted friend of Charles I, Henry was killed at the
Battle Newbury in the English Civil War. Wormleighton was burned down by
Royalist troopsto prevent it from becoming a rebel stronghold. Henry's
wife, a granddaughter of Henry Percy, the 9th Earl of Northumberland, was
immortalized as "Sacharissa" in the poems of Edmund Waller.


William Spencer 2nd Lord Spencer

William lived the life of a country gentleman and built a racecourse at
Althorp. His wife was the daughter of the Earl of Southampton,
Shakespeare's patron.

Secretary of State, Lord Chamberlain
Robert was an unscrupulous schemer involved in political intrigue, as
well as a lady killer with several mistresses.He enriched the art
collection at Althorp.
