Merle 'Pete' Leroy Carlson
CADILLAC - Merle "Pete" Leroy Carlson of Cadillac died Saturday, Jan.
24, 2004
at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac after an extended illness. He was 68.
He was born on Sept. 5, 1935 in Ludington to Robert and Stella Carlson.
He graduated from Ludington High School in 1953 and married
Joyce K. Carlson on Nov. 21, 1970.
Mr. Carlson was a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars and served
overseas
with the U.S. Army for 12 years, receiving numerous medals of honor.
He worked for 30 years as a computer troubleshooter for major
companies.
He was a member of Cadillac AmVets post 110 and was a past commander.
He also was a member of the Dale H. William Korean War Veterans post
1996
in Cadillac, life member of the VFW post 6864, the Cadillac Area Honor
Guard,
James E. Dillon Masonic Lodge 466 in Mesick
and 103 Royal Arch Mason Chapter in Cadillac.
Mr. Carlson was a commander of the Sons of the Union veterans Civil War
group
and was an avid Civil War and genealogy buff. He also loved gardening,
growing flowers and antique cars.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughters, Julie Carpenter of Las
Vegas,
Candie (Andy) Schonauer of Indianapolis, and Sandy (Scott) Fisher of
Modoc, Ind.;
stepsons, Robert (Nancy) Keith and Jeffrey (Janice) Keith, all of
Cadillac
and Michael Keith of Scottville; grandchildren, Katie Carpenter, Holly
(Jim) Turnbaugh,
Jacob Hunt, Joshua Hunt, Carlie Fisher, Faith (Lane) Schonauer,
Rachel (Jason) Keith and Kevin Gordon; brothers, Robert (Norma) Carlson
of Alabama
and Roger "Ike" (Midge) Carlson of Ludington; sisters-in-law, Yvonne
Carlson
and Rosemary Duggan, both of Ludington and Betty (William) Carnes of
Muskegon;
brothers-in-law, Lloyd "Bud" Marrison and Ronald (Donna) Duggan,
all of Scottville and Rodney (Rosemary) Skow of Adrian;
mother-and-father-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Skow of Scottville; aunt, Bessie Lyons of Traverse
City;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his parents;
brothers, Donald Carlson and Richard Carlson; sister, Charlene
Marrison;
and stepdaughter, Pam Keith.
Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home in
Cadillac
with Rev. Kenneth Pastotnik officiating. Cadillac Area Honor Guard will
present
military honors at the service. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in
Scottville.
Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home
with
a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Merle (Pete) Leroy Carlson, 68, of Cadillac, died Jan. 24 at Mercy

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 at the
funeral home.
Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
