Home-builder achieved his dream
Harrison Nordan began Union Twp. subdivision
by Judy Ashton, The Cincinnati Enquirer
Harrison Nordan, credited with building one of the first
subdivisions in
Butler County's Union Township, died of Leukemia Wednesday at
Christ Hospital.
The West Chester resident was 90.
Mr. Nordan's vision as a builder led him to buy 112.5 acres
for farm land
in 1956 on West Chester Road.
A $75,000 price tag didn't deter him from realizing his
dream of building
140 homes known as Highland Acres subdivision, said his son,
Harry Nordan
of West Chester.
"The entire family lives in the subdivision within walking
distance," his son said.
Mr. Nordan and his wife of 56 years, Kay Saxton Nordan,
lived on the
corner of Saxton and Nordan drives. Other subdivision streets
--
Debbie and Joan drives -- were named after the couple's daughters.
Mr. Nordan retired from the home-building business in 1970.
Before moving to Cincinnati in 1948, Mr. Nordan owned a
Texaco station
in a suburb of Detroit.
He sold the Texaco station to move to Cincinnati, where
he bought the
Gateway Lodge Motel at the corner of Reading Road and Tennessee
Avenue.
Two years later, he sold the motel to build homes in Reading
and Blue Ash.
"He was hard-working and always put his family first,"
his son said.
Surviving besides his wife and son are three daughters,
Constance Kelly,
Joan Nordan and Debra Church, all of West Chester, a brother,
William of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Vera Merle Meeks of
Goshen,
Ind.;
and Jewell Mrock of Lakeland, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 pm Sunday at Hodapp Funeral Home,
8815 Cincinnati-Columbus Road, West Chester. The service will
follow at 6 pm.
Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Evendale.
Memorials can be made to the Leukemia Society of America,
4150 Crossgate Drive, Blue Ash, 45236.
