in the German Baptist Brethren
Church in Putnam Co., OH.
Their name in app. 1875 on their tombstones was spelled
'BROWANT.'
Christian Browant was born in 1796 in
Manheim township?,
Lancaster Co., PA. He
married Catherine Gable/Gabel in 1820 in Lancaster Co., PA. They
were landlords of
an inn located on the Susquehannah River for six years. Then
they moved to
Cumberland Co., PA where he worked as a day laborer. In 1827
they moved to
section 3 of Milford township, Wayne Co., OH where they purchased
40 acres. In
1836 they moved again to Perry township, Putnam Co., OH In 1848
he purchased
160 acres from James Rogers where he had been living since 1836.
He may have
purchased the land earlier but the deed may not have been
recorded
until 1848. They
were among the pioneers of Putnam Co. Christian established the
German Baptist
Brethren Church in Putnam Co., OH and served as minister of the
church. Christian
died 2 Sep 1866 of typhoid fever. Catherine died on her 75th
birthday, 4 Aug 1875.
Both are buried in Sigler Cemetery, Putnam Co.,OH. Christian
spelled his name
Browant but when his tombstone was replaced with a new one his
name was
changed to Prowant, a spelling that all his children used.
CATHERINE: She attended school with James Buchanan who became
President of U.S.
This is now in doubt as she would have been to young to go to
school with James Buchanan.
