Mabel Bacon, 87, Dies Wednesday
Mabel McKenzie Bacon, 87, of 369 S. Main St., Custer, died Wednesday
morning at Memorial Hospital of Mason County. Mrs. Bacon had served
as Custer Township Clerk for 42 years. She had also worked for
the Ludington Daily News since 1935, running the Scottville Office
for 10 years and later serving as acting correspondent.
Mabel (Bobby) Saxton was born Sept. 11, 1891 in Eaton County,
the daughter of William and Catherine Ann (Coppess) Saxton.
She moved to Mason County in 1895 with her parents and
graduated from Scottville High School and then from
Mason County Normal in 1912. She taught school at the Resseguie School
for one year.
She was married to Elmer McKenzie on June 24, 1913 and
he preceded her in death in 1934. The couple had owned and
operated the McKenize Elevator in Custer for 12 years.
She was remarried on June 14, 1969 to William Bacon who survives.
Mrs. Bacon was a member of the Sugar Ridge Church of the Brethren,
the Ladies Aid Society of the church, was superintendent of the
Sunday School for 23 years, and had served as church clerk for many years.
She was a charter member and past president of Custer Gold Bar
V.F.W. Auxiliary No. 5096, a member of the Gold Star Mothers,
president of the Custer P.T.A. and had been
an Avon representative for 20 years.
Surviving are her husband, William; one daughter,
Mrs. Bernice Lasley of Branch; two step-daughters,
Mrs. Glenn (Lenora) Hissong of Custer and
Mrs. Howard (Virginia) Dodson of Ludington;
two step-sons, Eugene Bacon of Mount Pleasant and
Merwin Bacon of Custer; one sister, Mrs. John (Nellie) Reinoehl of Custer;
five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson,
17 step-grandchildren and 23 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, parents,
a daughter, Mrs. Cardinal (Rhoda Belle) Cameron;
one son, Lt. John E. McKenzie who died during World War II;
six sisters, three brothers and one great-grandson, Jason Lasley.
The funeral for Mrs. Bacon will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday
at the Stephens Funeral Chapel, Scottville, with the Rev. Paul Grout officiating.
Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Custer.
The family will be at the funeral chapel to receive friends from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
The Custer Gold Bar V.F.W. Auxiliary No. 5096 will conduct
a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.
Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy are asked to consider
memorials to the Sugar Ridge Church of the Brethren or
the Cancer Society, with envelopes available at the Stephens Funeral Chapel.

John McKenzie Is Honored at Party
Miss Geraldine Rohrmoser entertained at the home
of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rohrmoser, on Thursday evening, Feb. 4,
honoring John McKenzie of Custer, who left of Friday evening
for Nashville, Tenn.,
where he will enter service in the Air Corp division.
A lovely dinner was served at a prettily appointed
table. A large airplane was used
as center piece, with small planes being used as favors.
Mrs. Marion Ferris assisted Miss Rohrmoser.
The honor guest was presented with several nice
gifts.
Those enjoying the evening were Misses Norma
Peterson,
Cleola Knudsen,
Margaret Nelson, Mrs. Robert Marsh, Mrs/ Marion Ferris, Bud
Septrion,
Harlon Ptaszenski, the honor guest, John McKenzie,
and the hostess, Geraldine Rohrmoser.
