About Delbert Vincent Underwood:
Rev. Delbert Vincent Underwood, 90, of Gainesville, Florida, formerly of Beaver Creek, died Sunday,
April 4, 1999, at his residence. Born on Beaver Creek, March 10, 1910, he was the son of Creetus and
Lucy Sharp. He was the pastor of the American Gospel Tabernacle in Gainesville from 1959 to 1961.
He was ordained at the Wesley Fellowship and received his doctorate from Freedom Seminary.
Rev. Underwood was a retired carpenter involved with the maintenance of the Santa Fe Community College
in Gainesville. He also served as a business agent for the Carptenters Union Local #1278. He also worked
as a building inspector for the Veterans Administration. He was a Shriner and a Thirty-second degree
Freemason at the Masonic Lodge #41 in Gainesville. He was also an Elder at Christ United Methodist Church
in Gainesville and was also active in foreign missionary work. Rev. Underwood was preceded
in death by his wife, Ruby Eiland Underwood, and a daughter, Frieda Marie Underwood. He is survived
by three daughters, Marlene Pope, of Childersburg, Alabama, Mary Kreft, of Greenville, South Carolina,
and Martha Stephens, of Gainesville; three brothers, Arlie Sharp, Harold Sharp and Julian Sharp, all
of West Virginia; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were held Thursday
at Christ United Methodist Church, with burial in Forest Meadows Cemetery, Gainesville. Memorial
donations in Rev. Underwood’s name may be made to Mission Society for United Methodist, P.O. Box 922637,
