About Joseph Leander (J L) Eiland:
Registered for WWI draft, Milam Co, Tx
Thomas Jefferson, age 83, was living with Joe Eiland during
the 1920 census.
All of Joe and Willie's children were taught how to be independent at an early age.
They were people who cared for other people and this was taught to their children by their example.
Joe operated a "Beef Club" that butchered one calf each week to provide fresh beef to about 20 OR 25
families each week. Each family furnished one calf over this 20-25 week period to pay for their share
of the beef received. This was a way for the people of the community to have fresh meat during the
hot summer months when meat could not be kept for very long periods. Willie used money from her yearly
turkey crop to buy Sunday School materials for the Sunday School that she taught at the Gay Hill community
school house since there was no church building in the community. Joe operated the first school bus
to bring the Gay Hill school children into Rockdale High School in 1936 so they could finish their senior
year of high school.

Willie and Linnie went to a German school through the 4th grade. Then the government shut down all
German schools in the area.

(in paper 4/17/1969). Services held (Monday) in Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home Chapel in Rockdale.
Burial in IOOF Cemetery in Rockdale. Rev. Floyd Durham of Houston officiated. She was born Willie
Hazel on 10/01/1883 in the Bushdale Comm. near Rockdale. Married Joe Eiland on 10/19/1902. Preceded
in death by her husband in 1965, Also 3 children. Survivors: 6 sons, Emory, Vernon, Odis, Nolan, and
Curtis all of Houston and Floyd Eiland of Austin. 4 daughters, Mrs. Iona Rreutt of Alief, Mrs. Avis
Rae Yoakum of Dallas, Mrs Edna Mae Dubouis of Houston and Mrs. Laura Hill of Temple; brother Alvia Hazel
of Tomball; 2 sisters, Mrs. Pearl Harris Austin and Mrs. Elsie Hirt of Thorndale; 32 grandchildren;
25 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
