EIKLOR GENEALOGY

The"Greene County Ecklers"

There were as many as fifteen Eckler's who immigrated to the United States prior to 1900. Three main ancestral lines have been identified. They have been tagged as the MOHAWK VALLEY ECKLERS, the GREENE COUNTY ECKLERS, and the KENTUCKY ECKLERS. So far, none of these three distinct lines of Ecklers are known to be related to each other in any way. A general "rule" for determining which "tree" an Eckler is from, is to know where that particular Eckler's ancestors were located about the time of the American Revolutionary War. If the Eckler's ancestors were predominately from up-State New York (excluding Greene County, NY), then that Eckler is from the MOHAWK VALLEY Eckler line. If an Eckler's ancestors were predominately from the southern United States, then that Eckler is from the KENTUCKY Eckler line. If an Eckler's ancestors were from Greene County, New York and/or Pennsylvannia, then that Eckler is from the GREENE COUNTY Eckler line. This page is concerned mostly with the GREENE COUNTY Ecklers. However, some information is available from the other two "trees" to help differentiate between these three distinct immigrational ancestors.

The following information is in no particular order. These are some of the references I've found while researching the Eiklor surname; sources are included when possible.

  • Can you identify this gravestone? I found the photo while browsing through an antique store. I have been unable to identify the person or the place. Henry Eichler, born April 2, 1838; died March 15, 1905. Wife, Mary, was born January 27, 1840. At the time this photo was taken, she was still alive. Eckler-Ackler-Ackley Family by A. Ross Eckler.

"A somewhat smaller number of Ecklers descended from the Christian Eigler (or Egler), who was born in the Rhine Valley region of Germany (perhaps the principality of Hesse-Cassel) about 1680, emigrated to England in 1709 and was shipped to New York in 1710. He was a mason and stonecutter by occupation, suggesting a link with the Eckler family of Imsweiler, Germany. Although he had a son and three daughters prior to 1709, the only descendant to carry on the family name was a son Andreas, baptized in New York City in 1711. This family settled in Greene County, NY but few Ecklers live in that area today. The name changed from Eigler to Eckler in the third generation. One branch of the family spelled the name Eiklor."
