When traveling to these cemeteries, I highly suggest you take along a town map. Some of these are located in the back woods.
I honestly can't say if Cove Cemetery and the Old Cove Burying Ground are one in the same or not. I had stummbled acrossed this informaion, and thought I should share it with you. Old Cove Burying Ground is the oldest cemtery in East Haddam located on Rt. 149, set back from the road. The cemetery was started ca. 1693. When East Haddam was still considered part of Haddam, it was customary for the settlers to bring their dead across the river, to bury them near the town hall. During the winters, when the river was frozen solid, cart & oxen were used to travel. Until the winter of 1693, it was a very harsh winter when the late Mrs. Arnold had passed and prevented travel across the river. In need of a burial place, the family had buried her in the cove. After the burial of Mrs. Arnold, the settlers continued to use the cove to lay their deceased to rest. Many of the earlier familes of East Haddam can be found here. Some of the families are CONE, BRAINARD,ACKLEY, FULLER, BATES and OLMSTEAD.
