Notes:
Moved to the US in 1882 (B2) or 1883 (CEN1900-1920). A supposedly
5-year old Diedrich appears on the passenger ship list with his parents
in 1883.
He became known as Ditrich H., David Henry, Dave, or D. H. Bredthauer.
He spent his first married years in Vinton Township, Valley County and
near Elyria Nebraska. In 1904 he owned and lived on the south half of
section 13 and the northeast quarter of section 24 in Independent
Township in Valley County. In 1908 they moved to Maiden Valley and in
1909 went to live in Mira Valley. They bought the land in section 25 of
Enterprise Township that had formerly belonged to Mary Brown of the
Pennsylvania Colony era. He was naturalized in 1915. In 1917 they
moved to a farm south of North Loup Nebraska. In 1926 he owned the
north half of the south half of section 25 and 320 acres in section 23,
Enterprise Township, 400 acres in sections 19 and 30 in North Loup
Township, and 40 acres three fourths of a mile south of North Loup, all
in Valley County. Dave was treasurer for District 33 Sunny Side School,
and in 1922 a director of the Farmers Grain and Supply Company. In
1930 Dave retired from farming and cattle-feeding operations for a
while and did some traveling, including visiting the Worlds Fair in New
York City. They settled in Grand Island Nebraska and after feeding cattle
for some time north of town, they made their final home at 710 West
2nd where now is a Standard Oil station. He died of heart trouble.
CEN1900 gives his birthdate as JUN 1869, and immigration year as 1883.

Notes:
Or Anna Marie. Mary walked barefooted much of the way during the move
from Phillipsburg Kansas to Valley County Nebraska, tending the cows, in
1882. After the death of her husband, Mary lived alone in Grand Island
for many years. She lived with her son Oscar for a while, and then moved
to Scotia to live with her daughter Rose. Mary died of a stroke.
SSDI gives her death date as 15 Apr 1966. The Hackel family history
lists her birthplace as "Bentwater", but there is no such place in
Michigan. It is probably Pentwater or Benton Harbor.

Notes:
Born in Steinhude Nr. 138. Baptized as Wilhelm Hermann Brethauer, later
spelled as W.H. Bredthauer. Master baker in Nr. 138 Steinhude. A short,
jolly fellow, he met his wife at a dance, perhaps on Wilhelmstein, the
island in the Steinhuder Meer. He came to the US on the ship Fulda (of
the Norddeutsche Lloyd line), landing in New York on 16 June 1883, with
his wife and four children. He came to be known as William Bredthauer.
They first settled on Turtle Creek, near Elyria, Nebraska. Later the
family moved to a farm just south of the Chalk Hills at Scotia Nebraska,
with land in sections 21, 22, and 28. After they moved to Scotia, his
son, William, lived and farmed there. The farm is presently (1982)
occupied by Daryl Holt, a great-grandson. The three younger children
were born in Nebraska. The original home burned down and was replaced.
He opened the Bredthauer Department Store in Scotia, later operated by
sons Dick and Henry, then by Dick alone. In the 1910 census he is listed
as a retired farmer. In 1911, he owned land in sections 21, 22, and 28 in
Greeley County. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod in Scotia.

Notes:
Or Karl Hackel or Haeckel or Heckel.
According to his 1892 naturalization papers, he was a subject of Austria
before naturalization in the US. He was raised by step-parents and left
home at the age of 13. He worked around until he went into the army,
and was a soldier from 1870 to 1871. A bootmaker by trade, he came to
the US with his wife on the S.S. Smidt (on its first voyage for the
Bremer Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft), bound from Bremen, landing in
New York on 4 April 1872.
He lived at Pentwater Michigan in 1872. He filed a declaration of intent
to become a citizen in Platte County, Nebraska 29 August 1872. They
lived in Niobrara, Nebraska 1873, then in Omaha, Nebraska for 3 months,
where he worked as a butcher, putting on weight. They lived in Walnut
Township (formed from Long Island Township in 1879), Phillips County,
Kansas 1875-1880, farming a quarter section near Myrtle. There they
had but two cows and a dog in 1875. On 31 December 1880 he said he
was securing a home there and intended to remain in spite of the
privations caused by drought and grasshoppers. But he moved to Valley
County, Nebraska in 1882 and lived there until his death.
The Hackels spent the first winter in Valley County in a dugout north of
their later home. He was naturalized in Valley County, Nebraska 16
March 1892. He shot himself on a train en route near Vinita, Indian
Territory, while on a group excursion to Port Lavaca, Texas. The Ord
Quiz contains the particulars of the sad story. His remains were
returned to Ord on 10 March 1893, and he was buried in the Mira Valley
Cemetery, then later moved to the Ord Cemetery.
H says he moved to US in 1871 and that he died in Texas while on a trip.
OA85 says he was shot on a train. VNEP says he died in Venita, Indian
Territory, while on a train trip.

apparently to hide the illegitimacy of his widow's child born in 1870.
