Notes:
August. Sailor, lumberjack, farmer.
Already in 1848 he was no longer listed as living with his parents in the
census. He went to work at age 11 on a riverboat on the Elbe, hauling
clay products (brick and tile). The family story is that his father
arranged a position with the merchant marine out of Hamburg, he was
hired to work on a transatlantic freighter, and on his first voyage to
America at age 27 he jumped ship in New York. He gave his money to
some Germans in New York and got a railroad ticket west, leaving only a
few dollars for his food. But in fact he applied for emigration on 11
March 1869, and passenger ship records indicate an August Eggert came
to US 6 April 1869 on the Hammonia, age 29, departing from Hamburg and
Havre, and landing at New York City. (CEN1910 says he immigrated 1870,
CEN1920 says 1865, EFC.1, EGG2.1, EGG3.1, and EGG20 say 1868.) He
never served in the military, either in Germany or in the US. He worked
in a forest near Eitzen MN for three years, where he came to know the
Spannuth family. He may have lived in St. Paul briefly in 1870, working
in a lumberyard (CEN1870). On 6 November 1871 he filed his declaration
of intent to become a citizen of the United States, in Caledonia, Houston
County, Minnesota. At that time he could not sign his own name.
He moved to Burt County NE in 1871(EE4) or more likely 1872(FYH) and
worked as a farm laborer for Waldo Lyon, for whom Lyons Nebraska was
named. He was a charter member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran
Church near Lyons, Nebraska, in 1874. He purchased his farm southeast
of Lyons by grant from the US Government in 1879. This farm was on the
southwest quarter of section 5, Everett Township (later Bell Creek
Township), Burt County, Nebraska. He met his wife while delivering a
load of grain to Norfolk Nebraska, where she worked as a waitress in a
cafe. Their first eight children were born in the small house that was
later turned into a chicken house. The remaining children were born in
their new larger house on the farm. He had an extensive orchard and large
garden. He was naturalized in 1896 (CEN1920). They moved to Lyons in
May 1922 after son Herman took over the farm.
Taufpaten: der Hw. Martens zu Langendorf, Johann Heinrich Behn zu
Langendorf.
The 1870 census gives his age as 27. The id on this one is questionable.
The 1880 census gives his age as 32. EGG20 gives his name as Johann
Friedrich August.

Notes:
"Minnie" was confirmed 26 October 1879 in Schwetz. Her confirmation
certificate said that they lived in Jeszewo. She came to the US 27 June
1881 on the S.S. Australia with her parents. She was of a quiet, devout,
home-loving disposition. Her devotion to her near ones was shown in the
care of her aged mother, Mrs. Augusta Nehring, for seventeen years. She
died after an illness of 13 weeks.
CEN1900, EE2, EE4, and EGG20 say she came to the US in 1880, some
source says on 31 July 1881, CEN1930 says 1881. CEN1910 gives her
age as 43. GTA gives her age as 17 in 1881. EGG19 and EGG20 give her
middle name as Augusta. EGG19 and EE4 give her birthplace as Jeszewo.
