The log cabin built on the Raney Place to house the library

Ted Richmond started a small library on Mt Sherman; he lived in a small cabin that he called Wild Cat Cabin. Ted hauled books in gunny sacks hung over a old mule and traveled in the hills of Newton County handing out books. He befriended my grandfather Jeff Raney, and my dad Charles. Jeff offered to build him another cabin on his place, located on Mt. Sherman. He did and they called it Wilderness Library.

President Truman's wife sent Ted alot of books and had signed each one of them. My grandfather sold them for $20.00 after Ted left the area.

Ted Richmond and Jeff Raney had been shot at and threated for bringing goats to Newton County...'this was hog country they said!' Well, goats are everywhere now.
