Sarah Ellen Theodothia Guthrie was the second child born to Edmond Guthrie and Mary Reed Harkey Guthrie. Sarah Ellen was born February 1, 1869 northwest of Russellville, Clark Township, Pope County, Arkansas. She was named after Sarah Ellen Theodothia Reed, her mother's younger sister. Family and friends most often called her Sally; sometimes Sarah, which by custom of area folks, came out with the attached "ie or y" sound, hence Sister Sarrie, as she was refered to in church.
Shortly after Sally's second birthday, her mother died. She was soon sheltered by the love of her father and his third wife, Liza Childress Hughes. In April of 1878, when Sally was nine years old, Liza died...she was the first person buried in the Mossville Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas. Three months later, July 21, 1878, Sally's father married his fourth wife, Sarah Lucinda Bull. Sally received the love of a mother from Sarah Lucinda Bull Guthrie. Sarah Lucinda helped Sally learn to sew and taught her other household tasks that were expected of females of that time. She helped Sally make the dress that Sally is wearing in the above picture. Sally learned the skill of carding cotton, spinning wool, drying and storing fruits and vegetables, shelling and hand grinding of corn, the salting of meat, and numerous other chores of the day. All which in turn helped Sally to also provide for her family, to be a good wife and loving mother.
Sally was married to Edward Edgmon by Richard Thomas, May 27, 1888, at Cassville, Newton County,
Arkansas. Sally's father and family received mail at Cassville, as did the parents of Edward Edgmon.
Edmond Guthrie later moved his family near Boxley, Newton County. Edward's parents, Philemon and
Abigail Sparks Edgmon, had came to that area of Arkansas from Roane County, Tennessee in the mid
1850's. They resided at Cassville the remainder of their lives. Sally and Edward were living near
Cassville when their first child was born, 1889. They were living at Mossville by 1890 when their
second child was born. Sally endured many harsh and rough times during her life. But always gave
tender love and understanding to her children who were so very dear to her. She died Chirstmas Eve,
1919, at her home in Mossville. Is buried at Mossville Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas.
