In reference to number 6 above, Silas. Since as far back as I can remember,
he's always resided in North Carolina. And I know for a *fact* he was alive
and well in 1998 when I went there to see him. What's up with 'died in ...California.'

Judy,
One of my grgrandfathers was reported to live in Cave Creek in 1900. My
question is this, was Cave Creek in Newton County at that time? I have not
been able to find him on the 1900 Newton County Census is the reason for my
question. I have asked you about him before and continue to search for him.
His name was James Samuel Stephens b. abt 1848.
I know in the early 1800s that part of Newton County was a part of Carroll
County, so thought maybe Cave Creek may have had a change of it's borders.
Thanks so much.

Ella,
Your James Samuel Stephenson was most likely living at Cave Creek in Polk Township, Newton County, Arkansas in 1900....even though you do not find him in that census. I do not have 1900 Searcy County census, but I think you should look there for him. Cave Creek is very near the Newton and Searcy County line...seems census takers made a practice of wondering over into adjoining county when working the census. Please check out this map showing Mt. Judea, Bass, and Cave Creek:

Hi Rhonda
Always room for mistacks, haha, I might have looked him up on the SS#'s I
have a habit of doing that and there is room for error in that . I do find
alot of full birth dates and death dates on there, along with the wives
sometimes. and I didn't really follow up with some of these things that is
what is nice about these groups you have the chance of getting a correction.
My line is the Standridge's and the Cagle's. I have found alot of family on
some of these lines and have been able to get information and get
corrections. Oh yes I was going to ask you
was her name Clemintine or Clemmia on the marriage info? would like to make
the corrections. Your line is off of Martin and Katherine unknown Standridge
this is the same line ! as! C. L. Boyd's who had book on these family lines. He
had them all in one book and as seperated them into four books now one for
each one of Alexanders four Standridge son's. My Cagle family married into
three of these lines, Lemuel is is my line thru Lydia Margaret Standridge
Cagle, she married Charles Arter Cagle, and his sisters Susan Cagle, married
John Standridge and Nancy Cagle married Jeremiah Standrige and both these
son's were from the John Wesley Standridge line, Sarah Ann Cagle married to
Samuel James Standridge and his father was Samuel James Standridge Sr. So we
have alot of Standridge's in are family tree, even some of Charles Arter
Cagle's grandchildren married back into the Standridge lines later on.

Jetty,
I don't know of any site where you can make maps online...if you or anyone else finds such a site, please let me know. There are several sites where you can enter the name of a city and state and you are then shown that location and can print out driving directions from any location to that destination...left and right turns and all red lights along the way :o). A few months ago I purchased a map making program...have not mastered yet...it is hard for me to use...about like trying to use an Etch-a-Sketch to make a curved line...can't do it. Have recently been using the simple drawing tools that come in software packages with newly purchased systems...

Message From: Judy Tate
Terri,
Sometime feel that we will never find any additional on Elijah Coffee. He died so young...have often wondered just how he died too...have you ever heard anything? On his headstone E. L. Coffee. I use to think, well he had a middle name. But came to the idea that the e l were simple the first two letters of his given name. Have noticed similar with others...a Philemon signed and was known as P H...but he had no middle name... p h were first two letters of given name. Elijah and Samarah lived closer to Swain, than to Mossville where he is buried. That made me think that maybe he had family at or near Mossville. But my grandma, who was born and raised at Swain, said he was buried there for the same reason that her parents were. The Swain Cemetery sites right there on the 'edge' of a cliff...grandma said it was so hard to dig graves there...often had to use dynamite to break through to dig. So alot were buried at Mossville rather than in their community cemetery. Have never made any connection to other Coffee/Coffey of Newton County. The one other Coffee that I cannot place with a family is a Ben Coffee. He is in a picture taken ca 1919/21 at Mossville...is leaning in doorway of church, holding the roll. The picture does not show facial features to where I could compare to picture of Elijah Coffee. Isn't it something that there is a picture of Elijah...he died young and we know so little, but have a picture of him. Compare that to individuals that lived a long life and left a huge trail of information about their life, but no picture. Elijah was known as Bud Coffee. Have read material that states Bud is used similar to Junior. So, perhaps Elijah's father was also Elijah. Did find an Elijah Coffee in Clay County, Kentucky who had a son Elijah...couple of yrs. off on the birth year. But have been unable to find additional to compare to what we know about our Elijah Coffee. The census does state that he came from Kentucky. Samarah's grandfather, Marchant Thomas was among the first 300 inhibitants of Clay County, Kentucky. But no Coffees at that time in Clay or surrounding counties. Think it makes it even harder on us by Elijah fathering only the three girls and no sons. In addition to having a picture of him, it is also great that he has a headstone...there are so very many unmarked graves or graves marked only with a rock. I do wish we could find more on him, but our brick wall is nothing compared to our poor Samarah. The girls were babies when he died and so very many more hardships were ahead of her. I admire her for being able to overcome as much as she did...don't know how she did it :o).

Virgina,
I do not have much information (yet, still rumaging through all of my mothers documentation). All that I have written down is that Ida (Asher) Sexton married one Rufus (Luther) Clark and moved to Sherman, Texas. I do not know when they moved but I have pictures of their 3 children. My family history and stories have that Ida was born out of wedlock to Allen Sexton and Betsy Asher. Do not know what happened to her. But Ida was raised as one of the 10 Sexton kids. One of those was my grandfather.
Once I can get to the bottom of all of my mothers documentation, there may be more hidden in there than I have found or managed to piece together. If I find any more I will be sure to pass along. If you have any details that you can share, I would be grateful.
Thanks,

I got the General County Map [they have them for each county] which
comes in two sizes 1/2 inch which is 18X30 Scale approx 1/2 " = 1 mile
($4.00)and 1 inch size which is 36X60" ($6.00). I got the 1/2 inch size.
This is a current map, shows townships, ranges etc. Also churches,
cemeteries etc.
I also got the 1936 maps which I find more useful. Apx 18"x22" price
$4.00. These also show sections, townships, cemeteries, churches etc of
1936.

Message From: Lisa Hamilton Topic: Margaret Brown
James,
I have not found anything mentioning a Margaret Brown, but the following does mention a daughter of J. J. Brown who was Maggie, married to Edward Truitt living in Newton County...this Maggie could be your Margaret???
J. J. Brown was one of the most successful and progressive farmers of Pope County, Ark. His father and mother were born in Alabama and came to this county, and at a very early day settled in Martin Township with their parents. The early educational opportunities of the subject of this sketch were very limited, yet he improved his opportunities to the best of his ability, so that he was enabled to transact all necessary business connected with his farm. He entered the army when but sixteen years of age as a private, and served three years, but during this time was promoted to first lieutenant. Upon his return home, at the close of the war, he rented and worked his father's farm, which had been laid waste during the war. During this time he was married to Miss Sallie L. Rushing of Dover Township, who proved to him a help mate indeed. They lived together for twenty-one years in perfect harmony, and it was as much by the help of his wife as by his own perseverance and energy, that he made so great a success of his life. He purchased lands at different times until he at one time was the owner of 1,000 acres, which land was in his possession at the time of his death, on which he still owed $1,000, which sum of money Mrs. Brown has since paid, so that she is the owner of the place, free from all incumbrance. She has about 350 acres under cultivation , which she rents out, but as she is an intelligent and shrewd business woman, she has personal supervision of her property. Mr. Brown was reared in the Baptist faith, and although not a member of any church, was a moral, upright man in every worthy particular and had the thorough good-will and respect of his fellow-men. He was born on March 9, 1844, and died in 1888, his marriage having taken place in 1867. He and his wife became the parents of four children: Joseph O., Maggie B., Willie G., and I. J. The eldest son, Joseph, is attending school at Dover, and is now twenty-two years of age. Maggie is married to Edward Truitt, and is living in Newton County,
Arkansas, and all the children have received good educational advantages. Mrs. Brown was born in this county August 15, 1848, but on account of the war she attended school but little in her girlhood. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Church since before her marriage, and is in every respect a worthy, Christian lady , being conscientious, charitable and kindly in disposition. The buildings on her farm are among the best the county, and it is also improved by a fine peach and apple orchard, and, in fact, everything about the place bespeaks thrift and intelligent industry.

Ed,
Samarah Thomas, wife of Elijah Coffee, was a midwife and due to that, her signature appears on many delayed birth certificates of Newton County...especially births around Swain, Mossville, Nail, Limestone, Shiloh, and Cassville. Four grand and/or great grandchildren were named after her...my momma being one of them. Her name is spelled Samarah, as is the signature made by Samarah who delivered her...the others who are named after her also use the Samarah spelling. By the way, if anyone knows of any individual delivered by Samarah Thomas Coffee Lovell Curtis, please let me hear from you. Over the years I have compiled a list of babies she delivered and I would be interested in learning of any additional.
