Message From: Judy Tate Topic: Re:Mary Ann Verses Sabra AnnAfter I posted my opinion on Mary Ann Edgmon Clark being known as Sabra Ann in Arkansas, I started looking for this article that mentions Sabrey Lee...it might be of interest to some of you researching the Clark surname.
Edward Lee, grocer, was born in South Carolina in 1822, and is a
son of Henry and Lucy Furlow Lee, natives of the same state. From
South Carolina they moved to Cherokee Nation, or what is now Alabama,
in 1836, and in 1859 the father came to Crawford County, Arkansas
where he died in 1862, his wife having died in 1838. The father was
a successful farmer, and the father of ten children, of whom but our
subject and one sister are living. The grandmother of Mr. Lee,
Sarah Lee, was a native of Ireland. When Edward was about thirteen,
he accompanied his parents to Cherokee Nation, and on November 26,
1858, landed upon the present site of Chester. Arkansas, having
made the journey hither by wagon. In 1843 he married Miss Sabrey
Rankin, who was born in Tennessee in 1821, and bore him seven
children: Martha, now Mrs. Clark, of Newton County, Ark.; Emeline,
now Mrs. Simms, of this county; Mary, now Mrs. McClendon, of this
county; Frances, now Mrs. Osborn, of this county; Decatur, Lucinda
and an infant, deceased. Mrs. Lee died in 1875. Her parents were
Moses and Sallie Tombs Rankin, who in an early day moved from
Tennessee to Alabama. In 1877 Mr. Lee was united in marriage to
Mrs. Margaret Miller, daughter of William H. and Terracy Reynolds,
who came from Alabama to Arkansas. This union has been blessed
with three children, only one of whom survives, Margaret Alice.
Until this year, when he went into the grocery business, Mr. Lee
has been exclusively engaged in farming. He is a self-made man,
and owns 240 acres, twenty-five of which he has cleared, besides
being the owner of a good store at Porter. In 1863 he enlisted
in Company D, First Arkansas Infantry, United States Army, under
Col. Searle, and until the close of the war operated in Missouri
and Arkansas. Among the battles in which he fought are Saline
River and Prairie de Han. Mr. Lee is a member of the Masonic
fraternity and I. O. O. F., and in politics is a Republican.

Hello,
I'm trying to get over, around, under, through...a brick wall. Looking for
information on Elijah "Bud" Coffee. He was born April 6, 1858, in Kentucky,
married Samarah Thomas 12-28-1870 in Newton Co., and died 12-19-1885 in
Newton Co. If anyone has ANY further information on this Coffee line I would
be grateful.

Terri,
Sometime feel that we will never find any additional on Elijah Coffee. He died so young...have often wondered just how he died too...have you ever heard anything? On his headstone E. L. Coffee. I use to think, well he had a middle name. But came to the idea that the e l were simple the first two letters of his given name. Have noticed similar with others...a Philemon signed and was known as P H...but he had no middle name... p h were first two letters of given name. Elijah and Samarah lived closer to Swain, than to Mossville where he is buried. That made me think that maybe he had family at or near Mossville. But my grandma, who was born and raised at Swain, said he was buried there for the same reason that her parents were. The Swain Cemetery sites right there on the 'edge' of a cliff...grandma said it was so hard to dig graves there...often had to use dynamite to break through to dig. So alot were buried at Mossville rather than in their community cemetery. Have never made any connection to other Coffee/Coffey of Newton County. The one other Coffee that I cannot place with a family is a Ben Coffee. He is in a picture taken ca 1919/21 at Mossville...is leaning in doorway of church, holding the roll. The picture does not show facial features to where I could compare to picture of Elijah Coffee. Isn't it something that there is a picture of Elijah...he died young and we know so little, but have a picture of him. Compare that to individuals that lived a long life and left a huge trail of information about their life, but no picture. Elijah was known as Bud Coffee. Have read material that states Bud is used similar to Junior. So, perhaps Elijah's father was also Elijah. Did find an Elijah Coffee in Clay County, Kentucky who had a son Elijah...couple of yrs. off on the birth year. But have been unable to find additional to compare to what we know about our Elijah Coffee. The census does state that he came from Kentucky. Samarah's grandfather, Marchant Thomas was among the first 300 inhibitants of Clay County, Kentucky. But no Coffees at that time in Clay or surrounding counties. Think it makes it even harder on us by Elijah fathering only the three girls and no sons. In addition to having a picture of him, it is also great that he has a headstone...there are so very many unmarked graves or graves marked only with a rock. I do wish we could find more on him, but our brick wall is nothing compared to our poor Samarah. The girls were babies when he died and so very many more hardships were ahead of her. I admire her for being able to overcome as much as she did...don't know how she did it :o).

Terri,
Just noticed in your email that you have the marriage year for Elijah and Samarah as 1870...you meant 79, right? After Elijah died Samarah moved out near Cassville, lived there forever. Do you happen to have a picture of that house? It is still standing. Going from Mossville down toward Cassville there is a curve just before the Cassville Cemetery. As you approach the curve there is a road off to the right...just before you get to a mail box that reads Vearl Reynolds. The house is just a short way down that road, on the right. I have a picture of my grandpa standing on her porch, but does not show all of porch, let alone the house. Last time we drove down by the house it was dark and could not take picture.

Joseph H. Willcockson ranks among the first of the many wealthy farmers of Greene County, Ark. He was born in Tennessee in 1845, and is the sixth of a family of fifteen children born to the marriage of Sam Willcockson and Frances Gibson, who were Tennesseeans, and came to Greene County, Ark., in 1850. They settled on a tract of land on the west side of Crowley's Ridge, but sold this soon after and purchased 200 acres near by, on which he erected a steam saw and grist-mill in 1853, which was In 1870 or 1871 he disposed of his extensive farming interests in the county, and moved to Newton County, where he purchased a large milling property, consisting of a saw and flouring mill, and a cotton-gin. Here he did a successful business for many years, and sold out at a large advance over what he originally paid. He next moved to Brown County, where he bought a farm, which he managed until his death, in 1886, at the age of seventy years. His widow

My name is Rhonda Lee Standridge and I'd like to say 'thanks' for having me
as part of your list!
I'm presently researching my family's genealogy. My father was Lloyd Ray
Standridge, born in Pelsor, Arkansas on 26 Nov 1931 to Climintine (Savage)
and James Martin Standridge. I've found considerable info on Mart (though
hardly enough:-)) and I've found many interesting newsgroup/forum posts and

If anyone has *any* information on her, I'd truly appreciate it.

Nothing is known about her before then. I'm fairly positive she had quite a
bit of Indian in her, though I don't know what tribe. I was only around her

person. Whenever I was around her she spoiled me rotten, she did! :-)

Hi
I am new to the list. I am researching these and their collateral

PHILLIPS
Jesse Walter and Mariam Parmelia (Ethridge) Phillips family. His son
Absalom Carroll Phillips who married Sarah Elizabeth Davis, was my great
grandftather. Does anyone know if they are mentioned in the Goodspeed

Breedlove; Miles Holvie Phillips who married Sarah Elizabeth Bunch;
Frances Phillips who married Matthew Brasel; Margaret Phillips who
married John L. Allen, Tull Phillips who died as a child; Daviel Russell
Phillips who married Clarissa Brasel and Harriett C. Allison Ricketts;

James and Nancy Davis family. Their children were Debra Ann Davis who
married John Carlton; Alexander Franklin Davis who married Caroline
Harrison; Delitha Jane Davis who marrked Albert J. Reves; Mary Davis;
and my great grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Davis who married Absalom
Carroll Phillips. Does anyone know if any of A.F. Davis was in the
Goodspeed biographies?
RIGGS
Mahala Riggs and Mr. Riggs. His name is unknown. Mahala's maiden name is
unknown. Their children were James A. Riggs who married Nancy Ann Harp;
Benjamin F. Riggs who died in the Civil War; Robert Riggs; Thomas Benton
Riggs who married Gracie Jane Armstrong; William Riggs who married
Malvina Malinda McGowen; George Riggs and Nancy Ann Riggs who married
Allen T. Tennison. Nancy and Allen Tennison are my great grandparents.
TENNISON
Allen Tennison from Indiana, who married Rachel. Her maiden name is
unknown, but may be Estep? Their children were Henry Tennison, who died
before 1860; Mary Tennison who married James W. Smith; Lucinda Alice
Tennison who married Asa Nathen Holt, Jr.; Rachel Tennison who married
Lewis Midcalf/Metcalf [I am not certain about this child]; Allen T.
