Do you have info on the Lewis Daniels (1858-1937) line? I have info on most
of his descendants but do have some gaps I'm trying to fill in. Would very
much like to share/exchange info. I know I have at least one Young marrying
a Daniels. Renta Young married Harley Daniels son of William "Bill" Daniels
son of Lewis Daniels. Harley Daniels is the brother of the Anias Daniels
that Ray and I were discussing. I have other Youngs in my book but I don't
believe they have any connection to the Daniels line.
Vonda >>
Vonda,
Would this Renta Young have a brother named Isaac Young? I have him as
marrying Julie Richardson, the youngest daughter of my gg-grandfather
Frederick. If they are brother and sister I have no other info on him at
all. I know he is related to a bunch of other Youngs from that area. By the
way, my mother's maiden name was Young (from Texas) and so is my wife's
(Okla.) Small world, lol.

Dear Ella,
Did Bailey and Della have children? Or did Della have them before she married? I
only knew George that Bailey had with his 2nd wife they also had a daughter but
she died when they lived in California. My email address is
droopydrawers@eritter.net named for my 75 lb. Bassethound who has taken over
what is left of my life. He thinks he owns me, which he does.

Hello Lori,
Della Hattie George was b. 3/31/1868 d. 8/29/1939
William Gaither Duck was b. 10/26/1857 (tombstone according to the cemetery
listing which I think is on this site) My records show 1852, can't remember
where I got the date. The 1920 census show him as 61 which would make it
1859. It is hard to read so it may be that he was 67 which would make it
1853. Take your pick. W. Gaither died 10/30/1937. They are both buried in Mt.
Judea Cemetery. I thought I had taken a picture of their gravestone when I
was there this past summer but cannot locate it.
I think your Della is listed on the 1920 census living nearby William Gaither
family. 4 of her children are listed but it is hard to read so wouldn't want
to guess at the names. It may just be my copy, someone else may have a better
copy. It looks like the census taker may have dropped the D in Della and
given her the name Ella. Bailey Nichols looks almost like David but I'm
almost sure it is them, it shows her as 30 years old which would be right.

Colleen,
I have read alot of stories you have wrote on Newton County, mostly Lurton. I
live not in Lurton, but about 1 1/2 miles from Lurton. Did you go to school at
Deer? I did, my mom did, and now so are my children, my oldest daughter
graduated from Deer, she went from kindergarden on and so has my youngest she is
in the 11th grade at Deer. I love your stories about Lurton and growing up
there, I knew alot of the people you talk about in your memories of Lurton, I
knew Uncle Mitchell Hefley or Squire as most called him, and his wife Ollie, Do
you remember Bailey Nichols and Eula Hayden? I knew Herbert Hampton and Alta
Lee, Lillie Vanderpool, Herbert was the one who showed me how to remember to
spell Catsup. I knew Ernest Daniels we visited him alot. I know his wife Lois,
she is a nice lady. I feel like we are losing alot of the old people that I
loved so much. I miss Herbert and Felix Tennison. My dad and Herbert and Felix
knew each other well. Herbert died in April, my dad in August and Felix in
November it was a really bad year for Lurton in 1999, I loved all three. Well
Colleen, I hope to hear from you again. And hope to see some more of your
stories on Judy's site, they are so good.

Thanks for the information. When I get back from town, I'll fix you up a gedcom
file, if you will send me your email address. I never knew "A", but Aunt Mildred
said he was a fiddle playing fool, I have some pictures of A if you would like
them. I also have one of Toad and his wife and Elmer and Viola.
Just let me know if you would like a copy.

Hi Lori...I went to Lurton School with Lois and Athel...he was a sweet man
and a great talented fiddler...He could dance real good, too...He was too shy
to ask me to dance, so I would ask him maybe one dance in the evening and he
always said, "I don't keer"...when I said, "A, do you want to dance with me?"
EL has told me something about there being two different Dan Hefleys..One
lived up the Creek at the head of Big Creek and he says he is related to that
one...he said the Lurton Dan Hefley came in from the north someplace and he
did not think them related...If you have a ged com I would like that and I
can print it out for him. I don't know anything about them that far back.
Also, Carrol and Errol (her twin brother) were born on April 8, 1938 in the
middle of the worst snowstorm that year...there at Lurton in our old
house...I remember the day very well..
Thanks for your info...Colleen

Dear Colleen,
My mother's sister Mildred Dotson is married to Russell Heffley, EL's
brother.
And in my research I have found that EL's mother and father are 3rd cousins
and they are related to the Dan Hefley bunch alot.
I've already told Aunt Mildred this and she didn't like it much, and I don't
blame her but all of Newton County are related somewhere along the way. But
Uncle Toad was the only child in that family who spelled his name with 2F's
some of his children only used the 1F version. But they are related to Uncle
Dan's family on both sides. I can send you a gedcom file if you want, it has
alot of information on the Heffley's or Hefley's in it. Do you know when
Carol's birthday is? Aunt Mildred didn't know when their anniversary was or
when their son's birthday was. I would love to hear the stories EL has told
you. Aunt Mildred said Athel or "A" as everyone called him, could play the
fiddle so good, she said he had a heart of gold.
Lois the only sister Russell and EL have left living fell on this ice and
broke her hip, she had to have surgery and she just got out of the hospital
two days ago, she is doing alot better. But uncle Russ isn't doing so great
after he lost Custard, and both his sister's in 3 weeks time and my daddy
died in between his two sister's he and my dad were very close, he has just
given up all hope. He has Alzimer's and is going down hill, not fast but you
can still tell he isn't doing so good.
Colleen it sure was good talking to you, would love to hear about EL's
stories and to talk to you some more.

Hello Lori...
Am enjoying your letters to each other...(always did like to read
mail...
This is Colleen Haynes Rongey again...I grew up at Lurton next door to
Uncle
Toad and Aunt Margaret Heffley...My sister Carrol Haynes married their
grandson EL Heffley and they live now in Little Rock...I have heard EL say
that his dad was a 2F Heffley and mother was a one F Hefley (no relation)
...His grandmother was Margaret Cheatham and descended from the Sam Davis
line on Big Creek...
I'll be posting something on this on my Heffley page on Woodard's of
Tarlton
web site...soon...my brotherinlaw is quite a historian..he does not have
email, however...and I do try to write down every thing he says because he
listened to all his family stories (and the neighbors, too) ... EL can tell
you about the two Heffley/Hefley clans...
Now, Preacher Dan Hefley's bunch at Lurton are a totally different clan
to these two and they came to NCo much later...The 2 F Heffleys say they
are
no kin to the 1 fs, and I hope not, because ELs parents were both...the 1 f
Hefley of his mothers part are related to the author/historian James Carl
Hefley and he writes about his cousin EL and him catching blue lizards
when
they were kids together there on Big Creek...
In his book Way Back When by James Carl Hefley...he writes about many
of
the early timers on Big Creek and where they came from. All you NCo folks
need to get all his books and read/ keep them with your NcHistory...
In the middle nineties, while on our family vacation...I met James Carl
and his wife Marty Hefley when I went with my sister Carrol and her
husband
EL Heffley down to MtJudea to their annual Hefley/Heffley family reunion.
James Carl told me of his Mark Twain Writers Conferrence held each summer
in
Hannibal, Missouri where they now live...and invited me to come ... so...I
went there four summers for a week of wonderful writing
inspiration/instruction from a lot of authors they brought in...My idea of
a
really fun vacation...
James Carl is professor of writing/english/history there at Hannibal
LaGrange College and they let them use their campus for the four day
writers
conferrence, fed us and entertained us...people attended from all over the
country.and we made lifelong friends...His last conference was in 1996 or
97
when they stopped. His daughter Cindy Allison was the in charge person and
I
think she has another job and James Carl has been busy writing so this
will
never be again...
Since I do believe that nothing (or very little) in our life happens by
accident, I will always be grateful for the timing of that mountain
vacation where I met James Carl again...Knew him when we were both children
and this was in the 40s...he was age of my sister Pat and they were
childhood
friends. The NCo Historical has some of his books to sell...get one.
Go visit my Nco web sites and write me...
Thanks.

on Zade Dock Norton 1861-1944 married Mary Wallis 1861-1974 their son Lee
Roy Norton 1903-1977 married Stella Grace Page who is the daughter of
William Monroe Page & Eliza Jane Snow.Eliza Jane is my Grandmother's
sister. >>
Freda,
Zade Norton's sister was my g-grandmother, Sophronia Norton 1859-1936. She
was married to John Swain and their daughter, Myrtle Grace was my
grandmother. Sophronia and Zade's parents were Josiah Norton and Jennie
Ponder. Josiah joined the Confederacy during that war and was killed by
bushwackers in Tennessee during the war. After that, Jennie took all her
kids, about 9 of them I think, and made the wagon trip from Tenn. to Arkansas
probably about 1865. They were some hardy people back then.
The only thing, I show that Zade married a Jennie Brown and that Lee Roy was
one of their 9 children. I had been thinking that the Snows and Richardsons
were somehow related. I got the info on Zade from some of my Swain cousins
in Washington co.

Sorry Ray,
I don't know much about Rentha Young. I know she was born 22
September 1900, died 7 July 1994 in Stockton, CA and she married Harley
Daniels. In 1920 they were living in Jefferson Township, Newton Co. and they
had three children. After 1920 they had three more - one as late as 1942
(possible but I'm not sure about that). I do not know who Rentha's parents
are siblings were. A search of the 1910 Newton Co. census should answer that
question. If I get a chance I will check it out. I see Isaac B. Young (1889
- 1973) and Julia M. Richardson Young (1889 - 1982) are buried in the Swain
Cemetery.

Do you recall ever hearing the name of that Granny Woman? Great great grandma
Samarah Thomas Coffee Lovell Curtis (married three times) was a granny woman.
As were a couple of other females in my family. The name Ponder has been
mentioned on the list lately...there was an 'old lady Ponder' who was a granny
woman out toward Parthenon or Murray I think...don't know her given name, never
heard it, but have heard mention of her through the years. And there was a
Gumrey Hilton that was an herb man that did baby dilvering too. Am always
interested in hearing about all the old ways...the treating with herbs and
living by signs.

She said she just unwrapped it and layed me on her stomach till the granny
woman got there. I can't imagine!!!!!She had 4 of us at home . Then with
the 5th and 6th she went to hospital in Harrison. After the 5th she had
problems getting out of bed because something happened to her hips. she
couldn't get out of bed for several days. We never did find out what the

Grapette was really good...I read in a book about how the recipe was sold and
never had been marketed again...I'll try to find that...maybe we could get a
petition up and prompt them to bottle it again, huh :o).
And momma always talked about an orange pop that was really good, can't recall
what she called it...seems I remember her saying it even had little pieces of
orange in it?? She has also talked of the times when the family would go
picking cotton...they would go over toward Paragould, Arkansas and Kenett(sp?),
Missouri and also down toward Conway, Arkansas...depending on the year. They'd
go in the fall when the cotton was ready for picking and stay there until the
crop was all in and then come back home to Swain. She has told of how early in
the morning as they went out to the cotton patch they'd pick up water melons
that had been left on the vine in the field and bust them open and eat them for
breakfast. They'd be cool and perfect ripe, she said they were the best tasting
she could ever remember having. It was on one of those cotton picking outings
that she first remembers drinking some Grapette. And she always said it was so
very good. The othe day I replied to an email from Nancy Jane Balmer...am
pasting a portion of it here, as it refers to a Grapette bottle:
my goodness, watching two 2yr olds and one 1 yr old...you must be knee deep in
diapers at times :o). Just imagine way back when...when women had a baby every
year or so...and no disposable diapers or washing machines...they had a scrub
board and cold water from a well or spring. My momma came from a family of
eleven. And they raised up in the poorest back country of Newton County. Momma
has told me that when a baby wet, they just took the diaper (cloth) off and hung
it over something to dry and then it would be used again when needed...didn't
wash 'em until they had been filled with a mess. And if a baby had diaper rash,
there were no ointments or store bought powders. Grandma would save old mud
dobber nest (they are kind of like a wasp, but their nests are made of
mud)...she would find their nests in barns, in the house or underside of rock
overhangs. Anyway, she would then crumble them in her hand and dust the baby
bottoms with it. And babies were not fed formulas, nor even given a
bottle...what was a bottle? When my grandma's last baby was young, grandma took
sick. It was when the war broke out...she was worrying over one of her brothers
getting drafted and over her three oldest boys having to go into the army.
Anyway, she took bad sick and could not nurse her baby. My great grandma told
grandpa to make a sugar tit for the baby, and give that to him until Pet milk
(evaporated milk) an a calf nipple could be ordered through the little community
store (a corner of a room in someone's house) . So they took a white rag and
put a little bit of sugar in the center and then twisted it...making a nipple
sized shape. they then dipped it in strong coffee to get it a bit wet and stuck
it in the baby's mouth. He finally took it...or he would have starved...the
nipple came into town about two weeks later...they stretched the nipple over an
old Grapett pop bottle. And then he was all set...I can just invision that
contraption stuck in a little baby's mouth :o).
