Message From: Colleen Haynes Rongey

Hi Lori...I went to Lurton School with Lois and Athel...he was a sweet man and a great talented fiddler...He could dance real good, too...He was too shy to ask me to dance, so I would ask him maybe one dance in the evening and he always said, "I don't keer"...when I said, "A, do you want to dance with me?"
EL has told me something about there being two different Dan Hefleys..One lived up the Creek at the head of Big Creek and he says he is related to that one...he said the Lurton Dan Hefley came in from the north someplace and he did not think them related...If you have a ged com I would like that and I can print it out for him. I don't know anything about them that far back.
Also, Carrol and Errol (her twin brother) were born on April 8, 1938 in the middle of the worst snowstorm that year...there at Lurton in our old house...I remember the day very well..
Thanks for your info...Colleen

Dear Colleen,
My mother's sister Mildred Dotson is married to Russell Heffley, EL's brother.
And in my research I have found that EL's mother and father are 3rd cousins and they are related to the Dan Hefley bunch alot.
I've already told Aunt Mildred this and she didn't like it much, and I don't blame her but all of Newton County are related somewhere along the way. But Uncle Toad was the only child in that family who spelled his name with 2F's some of his children only used the 1F version. But they are related to Uncle Dan's family on both sides. I can send you a gedcom file if you want, it has alot of information on the Heffley's or Hefley's in it. Do you know when Carol's birthday is? Aunt Mildred didn't know when their anniversary was or when their son's birthday was. I would love to hear the stories EL has told you. Aunt Mildred said Athel or 'A' as everyone called him, could play the fiddle so good, she said he had a heart of gold. Lois the only sister Russell and EL have left living fell on this ice and broke her hip, she had to have surgery and she just got out of the hospital two days ago, she is doing alot better. But uncle Russ isn't doing so great after he lost Custard, and both his sister's in 3 weeks time and my daddy died in between his two sister's he and my dad were very close, he has just given up all hope. He has Alzimer's and is going down hill, not fast but you can still tell he isn't doing so good.
Colleen it sure was good talking to you, would love to hear about EL's stories and to talk to you some more.

Hello again, Lori...Glad to hear from you again...and no, I did not mean to sound offended in any way. I really dont know personally anything about the Hefleys except what EL has told me..And you are right about all the cousins...You may be the niece he has told me was in to genealogy and I told him I didn't know you...so now I do..and glad to meet you, too. Good luck in your research...Colleen

Dear Colleen,
I hope I didn't offend you. Believe me I have nothing but love and respect for the people of Newton County. I wasn't born here, but have been raised here for the last 30 years and I love this place and the people. My mother was born and raised in Newton County and after my daddy died I got interested in genealogy. It got so my family wanted to know where I had moved they didn't see me anymore. Just between me and you, I think they wanted to know where I was because the laundry and dished wasn't done, something they were not used to. To say this has taken over my life would be putting it mildly. I LOVE GENEALOGY. And the fact that I'm related to almost every family in a 40 mile radius didn't help. When I got started I went to the oldest child in mom's family and that being Aunt Mildred Dotson who married Russell L. Heffley and got as much information as I could and then hit the library's and the court house and then with ALOT OF HELP from people on the internet with the same family I found that the Heffley's and the Hefley's were in fact very much related. Aunt Mildred didn't like it either she said they were from different families and they were not related and they were, I felt like I had done something bad by finding out this information. But in fact I couldn't change history, nor would I want to. It's not just the Heffley/Hefley it is the Dotson/Dodson the Reddell/Riddell the Smith's the Campbell's ect. ect. I found out after 23 years of marriage I was 4th cousins to my husband, well there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it, I didn't like it, but you can't throw away 23 years of marriage and 2 kids for that, besides what would I do with the 2 kids, no one in their right mind would want mine. haha You know like I told Aunt Mildred, back in the old days when all this started kids didn't have cars or trucks or phones where they could look for a mate somewhere else, they took what was there and some of them I'm sure didn't know they were related, some did, they were told that is a different set, they are not related to us, when in fact they were related alot. My husband and I have the same great uncle Cassell Campbell, uncle Cassell married Freddy my husband's great aunt Annie Reddell and she died, then he married my great aunt Perlie Dotson. And also Freddy's grandpa Richard Reddell married his 1/2 neice and alot of people don't know that because they didn't have any children listed for John Anthony Reddell and Arizona Freeman when in fact they had 5 children, one of them being Effie Jane Reddell who Richard McKinley Reddell married. So alot of families are married to cousin's even mine. But that doesn't change the fact that Newton County has the nicest people and they are very lovely people who would do anything for anybody even in this day and age. Their just good people. But I would really like to talk to you again Colleen and to hear EL stories.

Message From: Larry Henderson

Hi Judy!
I can't believe that you responded so quickly!I'm grateful and impressed.I don't all of Lark's brothers' and sisters.I know his youngest brother was named Edgar. He passed away in1987 of Alzeiheimer's disease.Lark also had a sister named Mary who died a couple of years ago.She was one day shy of being 100 years old!My aunt Inez Henderson ,who is still living ,said Lark's parents were named John and Betty[or is it Bettie?}.I don't know the signifigance of his middle name, unfortunatley.I guess I'm doing this for 2 reasons, one to just find out who my ancestors really are,and I'm trying desperatley to find out where the Cherokee {who?!}connection is in the Henderson line.I'm sure it probably is on Lark's side and Delphia's [grandma]side.Grandma looked like she was full-blooded Indian. She would never tell my mother what the truth was.Maybe it was not something to be proud of then?Thank you for helping me,sorry to bother you.I have felt helpless for years about this.Delphia's parents names were James and Mary Jane Henderson.
Take care,
Larry....

Message From: Ella Porter

Hello Lori,
Della Hattie George was b. 3/31/1868 d. 8/29/1939 William Gaither Duck was b. 10/26/1857 (tombstone according to the cemetery listing which I think is on this site) My records show 1852, can't remember where I got the date. The 1920 census show him as 61 which would make it 1859. It is hard to read so it may be that he was 67 which would make it 1853. Take your pick. W. Gaither died 10/30/1937. They are both buried in Mt. Judea Cemetery. I thought I had taken a picture of their gravestone when I was there this past summer but cannot locate it.
I think your Della is listed on the 1920 census living nearby William Gaither family. 4 of her children are listed but it is hard to read so wouldn't want to guess at the names. It may just be my copy, someone else may have a better copy. It looks like the census taker may have dropped the D in Della and given her the name Ella. Bailey Nichols looks almost like David but I'm almost sure it is them, it shows her as 30 years old which would be right.

Message From: Lisa Hamilton

Brenda,
Here is James Cain from Goodspeeds. I don't know if he is from the Cave Mountain ones or not.
Lisa

James Cain is a native of this county, was born five miles east of Huntsville, and is a son of James and Mary (Dickey) Cain. The father was born in Georgia; when young went to Kentucky, there married, and in 1838 came to Madison County, where he farmed until his death, in 1880. The mother was born east of the Mississippi, and died about 1874. Of their family of ten, seven are now living: Hiram; Sarah, wife of James Hawkins; John; Mary, wife of Thomas Boren; Ellen, wife of Arnold Sikes; Melinda, wife of Pleasant Hargis, and James. The latter was reared in this section of the county, and even after his marriage continued to live with his parents and work the home farm, which he bought at his father's death. He is now a prosperous farmer of 800 acres, a large portion of which is valley land, and is the owner of a nice dwelling. His birth occurred November 16, 1845, and at the age of twenty-two Matilda Hawkins, daughter of James M. Hawkins became his wife. To them the following children have been born: Emma, Thomas, James M. (deceased), William, Mollie, John, Jason, Felix, infant (deceased), and Lydia. In politics Mr. Cain is a Democrat, and in religion himself and wife belong to Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cain is a Master Mason, and one of the influential men of the county. During the war he served as a private in Harrel's battalion for three years.

Are you interested in sharing/exchanging info on this Daniels line? Let me know.
Vonda

Vonda,
I have a cousin named Dianne Daniels Dingman from Arizona that I just learned about a couple of months ago and it is her grandmother and my great grand aunt, Martha Ann (Mattie) Richardson who married Anais Daniels and they had 7 children. They are listed them in birth order: Claude
Nola
Darrell
Dema
Homer (Diane's dad) 9/15/24 to 11/23/71
Lorene
Howard
That's all I know right now, I don't know who Anais' parents were or anything like that. Does his or their kids names come up anywhere?

I don't seem to be getting all the messages. This is the only one I have received about Lark Bethel Henderson and appears there must have been a couple before this one. Evidently mine got lost in cyberspace! Mentioning this only because I am interested in the Lark Bethel and Delphia Henderson line.

Vonda,
The original message asking about Lark B Henderson was in mid-late November...before you joined. I had forwared her a message from Larry Henderson, who by the way, joined the list this evening. So Vonda, it was before you got here and not lost in cyberspace :o). Once I get that batch of archived messages formatted, they will be online and then I can point you in the direction of the original message.

Billie,
Thought I would pass this on...today was talking with a cousin about pictures and she mentioned one taken of Eileen and Imogene Smith, young girls...was taken at Jim Edgmon's place by Clyde Champlin. Before he got the pictures developed that he took that day, Eileen died. Was last picture ever taken of her. She is buried at Mossville, not far from grave of Thomas Harris.

thanks Judy... I didn't get any respond from my inquiry on the Strode, Robinson, Harris, Youngblood, Winters families so guess no one knew them. I have all you know but am getting no place fast... I watch the posting on the Caseys, Hendersons, Vallines, etc as they were all kind of mixed in with the Harris bunch by marriage but to far back and to distant to do me any good. I will keep watching as some one may have a clue yet on the family of Thomas Harris prior to him marrying Abbey Strode Robinson.... keep up the good work.

I re-configured things to attempt to deliver only once...hope that is what it take to prevent duplicate emails coming your way :o).

Ray,
On your Norton line...I have a little information from my Norton cousins on Zade Dock Norton 1861-1944 married Mary Wallis 1861-1974 their son Lee Roy Norton 1903-1977 married Stella Grace Page who is the daughter of William Monroe Page & Eliza Jane Snow.Eliza Jane is my Grandmother's sister. >>

Freda,
Zade Norton's sister was my g-grandmother, Sophronia Norton 1859-1936. She was married to John Swain and their daughter, Myrtle Grace was my grandmother. Sophronia and Zade's parents were Josiah Norton and Jennie Ponder. Josiah joined the Confederacy during that war and was killed by bushwackers in Tennessee during the war. After that, Jennie took all her kids, about 9 of them I think, and made the wagon trip from Tenn. to Arkansas probably about 1865. They were some hardy people back then.
The only thing, I show that Zade married a Jennie Brown and that Lee Roy was one of their 9 children. I had been thinking that the Snows and Richardsons were somehow related. I got the info on Zade from some of my Swain cousins in Washington co.
